Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, firstly apologies if this is the wrong place, not too sure where it should go.
I'm driving out to the Arlberg in a couple of weeks time, I've already got snow tyres, I just need to get chains. Just wondering if anybody can suggest somewhere en route to pick a set up, or would i be best getting them whilst still in the UK? Driving from Rotterdam through Germany to St Christoph.
Thanks.

....any auto store or tyre retailer in Germany will carry them, just google a town which is suitable and google 'clack n go' or 'weissenfels' - these are the ones to go for, and they are reasonably cheap in Germany, depending on the size of wheel and tyre which you have.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Just wait until you get there and pop into any supermarket/garage in the area. If you already have snow-tyres, then the chance of needing them before you have a chance of buying are only slightly the positive side of zero.

as above, or any big DIY store probably do Schneeketten too (Praktiker, Bauhaus, Hornbach...). They'll also have the premix screenwash etc. good for -65 rather than the -20 stuf in UK.
Got mine from the ADAC store, since I needed them in a hurry, and they had them in stock, but they want to see the car registration doc, which has the exact car chassis, model, wheel size etc., and they won't sell you the wrong type.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Sitter, Do not buy at a garage as you pay an inflated price for anything. The DIY stores that Andy named are best. Obi is to found in both Germany and Austria as is Hagebau. Praktiker are not as widespread as they used to be. Down our way there is also BayWa and in Austria Lagerhaus. Another one in Austria that is fairly widespread is BauMax. I got some chains there for 15 Euro in the summer - they have been used but at least they are in my car if the police stop me!

Sitter,
Have a look on amazon.com - the uk site has quite a few listed and they are pretty well priced too.
I bought mine from amazon.de (german/austrian version) and they were much cheaper than many 'specific' online shops etc... And about €100 cheaper than a garage or dealer!

How do you know what size chains to get? I need some before I come in January.

holidayloverxx, They are sold by tyre size. So just look for your tyre size on the box

Waiting until I get there isn't really an option as it'll be about 7pm when I get to St Christoph (top of the Arlberg Pass) as I'm doing Rotterdam-St C in one day (done it several times before). Not sure when after arriving I'll be able to get out of resort to get some as I start work the next day. Was meaning to buy some/look around when I was in Austria over the summer but completely forgot, doh!
Will have a look on amazon and see what they've got.
Thanks
