Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ghost Dog, cranes normally lift big heavy things.

Top or bottom? Whatever it is it wasn't there two weeks ago.

1995-1996ish?

It's been called the "new" Penkenbahn lift for over a decade!

Other mountains in the valley have dual uplift (Kaltenbach and Zell am Ziller both have 2 parallel gondolas), so maybe Mayrhofen gets the same?

edit: all i can find is something saying that there might be a 2nd lift by 2014 and may or may not be an extension of the railway to Penkenbahn and/or Ahornbahn (the latter was moved a few years back?). Having the gondola and station within a short ski-boot clomp would not be a bad move imho.

We cycled up the Mayrhofen main street today to have a look around and see what's changed... We didn't see a big crane next to the Penkenbahn, but there was one next to the Ahornbahn... Is that the one you mean? It looked like they're possibly building a shop with apartments above, though there wasn't anything to say that was what it was, so I guess it could be anything.

The Spar on the main street has moved a few metres down the street into a shiny new building, with a SportAlm shop where the old Spar was. There's also a shiny new building housing Die Roten Profis downstairs and Harakiri bar upstairs about 50m down the street from the Penkenbahn.

Yes, there are two big yellow cranes on the car park side of the Ahorn. No idea what they're putting up.

The new Harakiri bar is simply one of the nicest bars in the alps and, word has it, they are going to convert the entire ground fllor into an apres ski bar rather than keep it ski hire and ski school. So expect Harakiri to try and take over from the Ice Bar when the lifts close. Evidently they spent an eye-watering amount of dosh pulling down the old building and putting up the new so alcohol is the obvious way to pay for it all.

I have it on good authority that the cranes up are for other projects and that the proposed new lift may start construction in 2014. There are still some disagreements / traffic planning issues to resolve. I believe they had wanted to make the connection from the train to the lifts a bit more seamless.

I imagine an eyewatering amouint of money was spent ruining (sorry, redeveloping) the Bruck n Stadl too. The building is stunning, but sadly souless. I suspect a change of DJ would help. I miss the old one, so much better than the Eisbar.

To clarify more, it's sitting around about where the Pilz bar is. Cement tanky thing in view too. Looks like it is works to that building.

IIRC the planning permission for an additional lift to the Penkenbahn is/was due to expire around now, so perhaps they are beginning the construction process now.

They're extending the restaurant that was there. I can't remember what it looked like before but it is massive now.

THought that was the case. There was an Umbrella Bar there, perhaps no longer.
