Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Nice
Is it me, or does the lens distortion make the arrete look more spicey than it really is?

Some nice vids in your collection... The 'Skiing out of the Door' Vid looks a bit hairy... I have climbed up and down that Arrete and I don't think I would want to do it on skis or my board...

Now that would just be "Un sporting of me" wouldn't it? Besides they thought it was a "good" idea to each carry 50kg

Yes but I tend to be a bit cautious when

I haven't skied in a month
I haven't used this setup (smaller skis and plum's) in 2 months
The snow conditions on the arete is at best dubious for holding an edge

I skin back up to the base of the ridge and crampon back up the arete, the alternative is a very long walk to Montonvers.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I wish I lived in the Alps.. being a tourist means you just don't get to see the whole place, it's all on piste or nearby. At least for me anyway, I can't wait to get some mountaineering courses in.

You would not get me walking down that arrete in a million years!! Watching that made me feel queasy!

Lovely to see some skiing in August though, thanks for sharing.

Go up the Aiguille du Midi cable car, walk out the door Wink

This is the view walking up the arete looking towards the door and lots of tourists where they shouldn't be - there is a sign in the concrete doorway some 5 meters behind them, in 6 languages telling them only equipped Alpinists beyond this point Wink

The ridge at the start looks pretty funky... Wouldn't trust myself to walk along that, think I'd rather have skis on...

Whilst I applaud your efforts to ski in August is it not a little dangerouse with those poles, or do you keep the spikes for a reason?

Well, its a bit of a tradeoff. You don't really just want an iceaxe there, cos the haft isn't going to be long enough to use as a support (and if it were, you'd have a job skiing down with it safely!) and its nice to have two poles to keep yerself stable. Grivel (I think) do, or did, similar devices with fold-away blades but I'd be much less inclined to trust them to stay in one piece in the event of a sudden fall onto steep ice. Having the spikes handy is probably also a good thing if you were skiing some particularly alarming icy steep things.

There's a higher chance of stabbing yourself in the arm or leg in a big cartwheely crash, but you can offset that against the higher chance of you not sliding off a cliff. In a more moderate crash, you're unlikely to do yourself a mischief if you keep hold of your poles, given that the pointy bit faces directly away from you.

I'm sure the last time I was there there was a nice rope handrail to cling to. Maybe they ditch it in the summer?
