Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

2012 World Snow Awards

Poster: A snowHead
This just in. I'm loving it... silly season is underway... importantly they come after the world-beating Snivel Awards Laughing

Your field day starts here:

Quote:
Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard magazine and VOS Media are proud to announce the World Snow Awards, dedicated to honouring the very best in the world of skiing and snowboarding.

The winners will be announced at a fun-filled awards evening on Friday 2nd November at the annual Ski and Snowboard Show in Earls Court, London. The event will form the centrepiece of Daily Mail Ski & Snowboard's 25th anniversary and will be attended by readers of the magazine along with the great and good of the snowsports industry.

Set to become one of the highlights of the snowsports calendar, the awards will reward resorts, companies and individuals in 25 categories. These will include the best European resort, North American resort, ski and snowboard brands, airline, and specialist and mainstream tour operators.

The World Snow Awards will be judged by a panel of leading ski and snowboard experts and by public vote. Ski and snowboard brands will be judged using Daily Mail Ski & Snowboard's extensive results from annual ski and snowboarding testing weeks.

With over 25 years of experience reporting on the snowsports industry from across the globe Daily Mail Ski & Snowboard is the UK's leading snowsports publication and is perfectly placed to launch an awards scheme highlighting the industry's outstanding companies of the year.

Winning a World Snow Award is an independent stamp of approval for a company and its products, singling them out from the competition. VOS Media will work with all winners to gain as much impact from their World Snow Awards win as possible.

Nick Miller, Chairman and publisher of Daily Mail Ski & Snowboard says, “The World Snow Awards will showcase the very best that the snowsports industry has to offer”.

“The ski and snowboard world is one of the most vibrant and innovative sectors of the travel industry, the World Snow Awards will help highlight those who go that extra mile and lead the way for the rest of us.”

“I’m proud to help bring these awards to London for the first time, especially as Daily Mail Ski & Snowboard celebrates its 25th year as the UK’s leading snowsports publication.”

To book a table at the awards and reserve your place at the most prestigious awards ceremony in the industry contact:

Tables for 10 cost from £1,995+VAT, (or £1,795 + VAT if booked before 15th September) http://www.metrosnow.co.uk/world-snow-awards or call 020 7370 8510.

Marvellous - if only the late lamented Snowheads Awards had materialised as promised we too could have been coughing up £235 a head for a taste of that prestigious rubber chicken.

Actually just reads like a pisstake of the esteemed Mr Keith but with logical spelling and gramma. Are we sure it's furreal?

fatbob, "furreal" or "funereal"? Anyway, it's for real alright.

So, if you take a partner, stay in a hotel, buy loads of dwinks (bound to be extra), you might just squeak some change outa £800 - to eat in Earls Court Laughing

Well it'll certainly have hair growing on it when they sell no tables. At least the Snivel Awards at the B'ham Ski Show are free (apart from getting in the show of course) and you don't have to eat warmed-up rubberised lamb.

fatbob, yes, I know the parties concerned and can say with 100% accuracy that Mr P Keith of no fixed abode, has nothing to do with it. A small furry animal adorning the awards for a little skiing nation like ours seems appropriate, but "World" seems a bit arrogant eh?

Well, snowHeads is a place/facility/organisation that exists to enable its members to discuss snowsports (even in July, when ordinary folk just don't understand), to provide each other advice, support and opportunities within the field, to gain benefit individually through the strength of the group as a whole, to hook up, to ski, to have fun together.
Evidentially snowHeads has enabled a substantial number of people to ski together, to ski better and to ski more often.
It has occurred to me (and to others, it seems) that we are doing, with he technology of the day, almost exactly what those who started the SCGB did with the technology of theirs.

So tell me: what is it that you think is missing that so certainly precludes snowHeads from seeing themselves as a club?

The lack of committees? - We don't need them as the open structure empowers every member to initiate or develop anything they like for the group.
The lack of a Club House? - Which would be geographically inaccessible to the majority, wherever it was.
The lack of a Club Tie? We have buffs which are better NehNeh

And as for the 'global' element - I can assure you that people do engage with snowHeads from the 5 corners of the Earth. Indeed, on bashes we've had people from most European states, from Israel, the USA, South Africa, Japan, even from New Zealand. On-line the membership is all the more diverse. It may be true to say that most registrations from Russia were not particularly snowsports oriented however there have been a few legitimate enthusiasts register even from there. Don't make the mistake of thinking that snowHeads comprises only those who post in high volume. Regular readers far outnumber posters but they are no less engaged with snowHeads. We get password resets, donations/subscriptions, t-shirt or sticker purchases and even bash bookings from people with 0 post counts.
And, naturally those who speak English less well will be less likely to post.

Just to be clear: I have always been less concerned with the 'official status' of what snowHeads is than what snowHeads actually enables for people who use it. See it as a club, a forum, a network or just a substitute for office banter when you're working from home, it doesn't really matter but I don't think you can state so categorically that 'a ski club we aint' when it fills that role so well for so many people.

I first updated the Meta tag to 'Global Ski Club' when we had, perhaps, a tenth of the members we have today. Maybe it was a little tongue in cheek at the time but it's certainly not mendacious: snowHeads is indeed open (and I hope welcoming) to anyone, anywhere in the world who holds a passion for snowsports. Hell, for all I know we might even have members in Dubai!

I refer to it as a club when I'm talking to other people. Don't want them to think I'm consorting with weirdos off the internet, do I?! wink It seems like a club to me, but I'm no expert, since I don't belong to any others.

Edit: I've just remembered I do belong to one other club, which meets very infrequently, less frequently than snowHeads get together.

same here. specially for my 1st bash attendance whe I knew nobody.

having been on various club committees, and had my fair share of all the cack that comes with elected committees, I quite like a "club" with an informal nature. Just like minded people that want to partake in their chosen hobby, with other like minded people.

at those prices, I hope there's some pretty decent caviar and champagne etc. Wink

admin, a good response. I was not being too serious - I'm happy with sH whatever / however it designates itself. If I wasn't I'd quietly leave. Wasn't trying to wind you up.

As you know, I was in almost at the beginning, dropped out for a bit and then returned. It's still a great place and maybe some day I'll even make it to a bash.
(Made it to SBBQ No. 1 and also met up with some sHs once on a ski holiday in Les Arcs - I'm not a total internet-only 'member'). I do appreciate your 'lightness of touch' approach.

sHs goes onwards and upwards - Snivel (and some other imitators) have a lot to learn about establishing a community like this. snowHead

You do....although it looks like Dubaian might have moved along the Gulf a little bit. I have to say I check the snow reports daily on here to remind me of what the snow looks like, alongside the BBC news (it's that important). When I joined (very early on) I was a student so had rather more time on my hands....sadly not the case now Sad so I lurk more and I, like Dubaian, also disappeared for a number of years!
