Hello
i know its early but I want to start researching my Feb 13 ski holiday and would like to ask for some advice!
For the past few years the trips to North America have included;
Banff
Whistler
Heavenly
Vail and surrounding resorts
Jackson Hole
resorts around Park City
there are two of us that go and both good intermediates, enjoy skiing through gladed areas as well as powder and on piste and we are happy to base ourselves in one main resort and drive out to satelite resorts for day trips skiing. Go for 10/11 nights and are happy to have flights that are not direct! Happy to go to Canada or US
In terms of the resort / town nightlife we like a drink when we come off the slopes and then a good meal in the evening rather than a load of bars!
Do you have any suggestions of places for us to go to for Feb 2013 - we will be going for the last two weeks of Feb
Thanks for any suggestions
Rob

Those places you mentioned above- you say you've been there last few years?
If so I might be surprised if you are able to get much more info re NAmerica here! You know America better than most of us...
As a matter of interest, did those places not do it for you? I have never been, and I only ask as they would probably be my first picks if I were to go to America.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You've only really missed Interior BC, Montana/Idaho, Mammoth and Aspen from the major areas that might be considered destination resorts. the 1st 2 probably require driving between multiple bases to get the best out of the areas e.g. Fernie-Golden-Revy- Vernon-Kelowna -Rossland for BC

Other misses: Steamboat, Big Sky, southwest US (Telluride/Taos/Silverton) and other Tahoe mountains besides Heavenly (Squaw/Kirkwood/Northstar)
[edit]
I see Montana already mentioned (Big Sky). But it's not necessary to drive around in Montana. You can just stay put at Big Sky.
[2nd edit]
I'd say Aspen should be on the top of your list. The only negative is cost.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

+1 for Aspen. Unique town, 4 ski areas and no need for a hire vehical if you fly into Aspen.
Steamboat, Winter Park and Copper on same RMSP+ pass.
Resorts near Salt lake City, usually great snow.
Fernie for some steep and deep, and Kimberley for an away day.
Better still have a change and go to Japan.

patricksh, I am lucky enough to get a holiday in the States / Canada each year and we have based ourselves in Park City for the last two years (we added three nights in Jackson Hole this year too) and have loved all of them. I absolutely loved Park City and the surrounding resorts. Heavenly was the only "resort" that I thought a bit odd though as we are there for the skiing as number one priority we still had a fantastic time. Was very odd being the only people in the Casino in ski boots!! We were also able to ski in the surrounding resorts when we were there too.
our aim is always to try somewhere different each year (though we broke that rule last year staying at Park City but added JH and went to new surrounding resorts) so the suggestions above are great - i like the idea of Montana, Aspen and Interior BC so will start looking at them.
Thanks all for the suggestions and I'll get started looking now!

darbyrw, Have done your list too You should like Aspen a great place as others have mentioned, coupled with the fact that each mountain there offers something different - a bit like Utah.
When you say surrounding resorts of Park City, how far ? We've hit Utah for the past couple of years and moved around skiing the Cottonwoods too, along with Sundance and Ogden area.
Interior BC is another good option - Kicking Horse, Revy, Sliver Star, Big White, Red, Whitewater, Fernie .. a combination of some of these would be good. Plan a roadtrip and do the lot

There's also Apex and Sun Peaks you could add to that list.
For 10/11 days you'd probably only want to do 2 or at most 3 of those. Big White and Silver Star are an obvious combination - under the same ownership so you can get a lift pass which covers both, and both only about an hour from Kelowna airport. If you've got a bit longer then you could fly into Vancouver and do a round trip which gets you a bit of scencic touring too and do those two plus Sun Peaks. I'd recommend making sure you hire a small 4x4 rather than a car if you're going to do that though.

The best glade skiing I've ever seen was in Panorama. The best powder I've ever seen was in Big Sky. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend either resort to someone meeting your description, but it's worth noting that Panorama's best glades are quite challenging. If you're not comfortable with double blacks, it might not be a great choice.

Okanagan, They ski resorts of Silver Star and Big White are no longer linked according to an email from the resorts this week. We were looking at getting a joint lift pass this year! We will just get a season pass for Sun Peaks and use the 25% off in the other resorts.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The best glade skiing I have come across is in Vermont and New Hampshire (it is what they have), but very lucky to get any powder unless there's been a big snowfall.
Taos in New Mexico - wonderful Glade skiing, beautiful artsy town, a couple of nice small resorts nearby (Red River and Angel Fire), and Santa Fe has a nice ski center (but only a day or so skiing there)
And Taos Ski Valley - wonderful skiing and as per the rest of the area, wonderful views.

Mammoth is probably my favourite resort Stateside.
The quietest ski area in th world - June Mountain - is a short drive away, the new village is a bit chintzy but really nicely done and the old town is spread out but really chilled. Plenty of good restaurants within easy reach as well.
The Skiing covers pretty much everything, steeps, bowls, glades, miles of perfect piste.
Just a great place and you can either fly in or drive up from LA or Vegas for a stopover.

You know it makes sense.

June Mountain has closed down - supposedly will not be opening this coming season.

So we had an email this week and it said they had regladed some areas and that included reglading three runs in tayton bowl.
I got the impression this meant they were less tight and so easier now

darbyrw Our last Trans-Atlantic trip (in 2010) was a DIY, road trip affair with flights to Calgary. We had a great time with the following itinerary- though it wasn't done in the order shown:
Castle Mountain (x1 day) - great area, great snow, very quiet in Feb (UK) holiday week.
Fernie (x 3 days) - Not the best snow - rain/mush at base level, expensive lift ticket with no reductions for multi-days. Decent ski area though.
Pass Powderkeg (x1 day) - Tiny, locals' area - great snow, deserted slopes.
Fernie Wilderness Adventures Catskiing (x2 days) - Mindblowing powder, fantastic organisation. Highly recommended.
Less than 13 weeks until our New Year Canadian road trip , when we're planning on visiting the following areas:
Apex
Big White
Silver Star
Revelstoke
Crystal Mountain
Mustang Powder Catskiing
