Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Any ideas for a ski trip in Jan 2013? 3 families together in a catered chalet. All have skied just once before, so looking for:
plenty of greens and blues
good lessons
close to lifts and the snow and easy ski back into the village
snow sure
reasonable interest in village for non-skiers
(BTW: kids are mostly teenagers)
don't mind which country in Europe

All comments welcome!

Are you looking at New Year or after? That will have big effect on cost and how busy slopes will be.

Morzine comes to mind snowHead

With 3 families, and all at the same level, then you've probably got a class full on your own. This opens up some posibilities as you won't necessarily have to go to a resort with lots of other Brits. In fact I'd recommend this.

At your level you won't need miles of piste. A smaller resort might be even better as you won't be 'overfaced' by it - not to mention being significantly cheaper. There are loads of places like this that most Brits have never heard about. You'll just need to check with the local ESF that they have at least one English-speaking instructor and book them.

For France, I suggest you browse through this:
http://smbt.g-r-c.fr/userfile/file/1313058761_SMB2011_guidStations_ok.pdf

If your desire for miles aren't too great then Albiez Montrond might suit the adults (but could be cramped for teenagers). Otherwise, perhaps look at Valloire.

dates are from 5 -12 January or thereabouts (12th being the latest we can be there)

Isn't Morzine quite low with the skiing all far from the chalets and dsnger of poor snow? (I speak from ignorance, just what I've read on the web)

camelthief, forget Courcheval (on your other thread) then for those dates! The Russians will be paying top dollar because that is the Eastern Orthodox Christmas/New Year period.

Why limit yourself to a catered chalet? There are plenty of small but good hotels to choose from and it allows a degree of flexibility in rooms. Or is exclusivity what you are looking for?

In France I would look at Samoens/Morillon in the Grand Massif region and you may just find a chalet that fits your requirements. Also I find the Serre Chevalier area an excellent option for beginners wanting to progress, as is Le Grand Bornand in the Aravais area.
In Austria, try looking for places in Serfus/Fliss/Ladis or perhaps Obergurgl or Oberlech (very pricey though). Also other good areas are St Johann-Alpendorf, Wagrain, Flachau or Zauchensee in Salzburgerland. The Wildschonau is a nice but somewhat disjointed area but a place in Niederau would give you a good choice of skiing close to the village. However, you would have to look for hotels in most of these areas as catered chalets are few and far between, especially on the ski slopes.

In Italy there are many options in the Dolomites but you may have difficulty in finding a catered chalet that fits your requirements. Folgarida is a good resort for a second trip and there is a snowHead called Wayne who runs organised trips there.

In Switzerland you have a variety of possible locations as well; Mürren or Wengen spring to mind as does Grindlewald, but you will have the strong Swiss Franc to contend with, so therefore potentially very expensive.

You really do have many options so perhaps an indication of budget, whether you are happy to DIY or want a TO to do the work for you would help people. Do you prefer to return to France or are you open to other countries as well?

Camelthief,

Have a look at Hotel Graciosa in La Plagne with Ski Olympic. We went at Xmas last year and whilst we don't have a family, it's a 40 bed club hotel setup perfectly for families and there were plenty there that week.

It's ski in/out right above the main resort centre and there's a British ski school in the resort (Oxygene).

Loads of easy blues for your party to play on.

PM me if you want anymore info.

Yes very few people go, it is practically a ghost town wink Very popular with Brits, great resort, linked to a good area.Last season was amazing - season before that the snow was rubbish.

Hi camelthief,

If you think that La Plagne might suit then please take a look at our chalets - linked below - which might suit? We can help book lessons etc too and, as altis suggests private lessons all together might be a good option?

Happy planning!!

Snow and Sunshine,

Hi Snow and Sunshine La Plagne might suit and is on our shortlist. I need more info about its suitability, especially for being in the snow, close to lifts, easy skiing back, not having to go far away to ski, good greens and blues, good for absolute beginners as well, good village interests.

camelthief, get thee a copy of Hardy's Skiing and Snowboarding Guide as this will have all the information you need, organised for easy access:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hardys-Skiing-Snowboarding-Guide-2009/dp/1860114083?tag=amz07b-21
Second-hand copies are probably available cheaper elsewhere. There are many on ebay.

Don't worry if your copy is a few years old. Resorts don't change that quickly.

Unfortunately we can't guarentee the weather but La Plagne is lucky enough to have a really good snow record and January is generally a good month to travel so you should have no problem. There is a glacier and around 70% of the ski area is above 2000m which are the usual indicators which people look for to confirm that a resort is snow sure.

The resort is well set up for beginners with lots of blue runs, linking the majority of areas, so once you are confident on a blue you can ski everywhere. The resort accommodation is divided up into seperate villages and most villages have small, purpose built green slope beginners areas which are a great place to start. There are also longer green runs in Plagne 1800 and Plagne Centre. There are also a number of excellent independant ski schools.

All of the La Plagne area is built so that the skiing is near the accommodation and unless you stay outside of the resort, you will be able to walk to the lifts. Our chalet Genepi is 300m from the nearest lift, or Bon Vie is ski-in ski-out.

As well as the skiing there is plenty to do in the La Plagne area including a heated open-air swimming pool, sledging areas, bowling, ice-skating, in-chalet massage and treatments, skidooing, parapente flights, snow shoeing and an olympic bobsleigh track. There are also plenty of restaurants, shops and cafes to visit.

Hope that helps - and happy planning!!

camelthief,

Although it was a hotel rather than a chalet and we were COMPLETE beginners, you might find my trip report on Serre Chevalier useful nonetheless. We'd loved it there.
