Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

1980s Finnish ski-jumping hero re-arrested

Matti Nykanen, who won gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics and became a national hero in his home nation of Finland, has been arrested following an assault on his wife.

Matti Nykanen's fifth wife, Mervi Tapola-Nykaenen, whose battered face was splashed on the front pages of Finland's tabloids, said Nykaenen had turned to alcohol following his recent release from prison. He was released on parole after serving half of a two-year, two-month sentence he received for stabbing a friend during a drinking binge in August 2004.

This report from The Australian.

Background to this story: snowHeads thread Aug-Oct 2004.

I don't know what Nykanen's body was going through in the 1980s, but concerns have been expressed in recent years about seriously underweight ski jumpers achieving success because that's one way to fly further.

The other way to fly longer is to use longer skis, but as this article in the US magazine 'Ski' points out the FIS have capped ski lengths.

If Nykanen was on a strict diet regime 20 years ago (along with any other psychological pressures of being at the top of his sport), it may have affected his mind for the worse. Whatever ... his life has clearly turned from triumph to tragedy, and it's a real shame for everyone concerned.

Very sad - but note he is now at wife No 5. No idea what happened to 1-4 but from the article he has had drinking problems for a very long time.

Finally rectified through the imposition of compulsory height to minimum weight ratios.

A press release from FIS details the measures taken.
