Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Samoens

Thinking of doing the 'Buy an Alps apartment thing' and wondering if anyone has any thoughts on Samoens? Is it about to get over commercialised? It looked beautiful in the summer this year and near a gondola....

I was in Samoens this summer as well, there did seem to be a lot of building work going on.

If the apartment is near the gondola then I would say that it was in a good spot. Certainly that is one of the drawbacks of the village that a lot of the accomodation is away from the gondola.

Can't complain about the ski ing though with plenty to do in the Grand Massif, and a short drive from Geneva so the chance for a few weekend trips on Easyjet. Easier to rent out (to other snowheads) as a short way from the airport.

Freestyle,

Welcome to snowHead
If you search for samoens on the search facility Ise, who has some experience of buying in the area has some comments to make about the exploitation of Samoens.

For what it is worth I found it a lovely village connecting to a good area.

Freestyle, Welcome. As T Bar, suggests, try the search facility. ise used to own a property in Morrillon I think, which is just down the road, so he should know the area well. I have skied out of Morrillon from an apt about 75 metres from the gondola. I do think that Samoens is very pretty, but unless you are buying right by the new gondola, you could be bussing or driving to the lift.

THanks guys. This is a REALLY good website. Especially now I've found the search facility. There's loads of info on there to get my teeth into. From the apartment we're looking at, it took us 5 mins to walk to the gondola - which we thaught was great and there's a new supermarket opening up right near that apartment building too. Call me lazy but that'd be great....

There were a lot of cranes around the village and I was wondering if there's an influx of Brits...

Will read the backcataglogue of info though. Thanks again..

chrisb is exactly right, I'd want to be in walking distance of the lift in ski boots and walking distance of the town in the evening.

This is my first post so I don't know my way around the site yet. I am also interested in info on Samoens as I am in the process of purchasing an apartment in 'Les Fermes de Samoens' using a leasebeack scheme. It ticked all the boxes for us and is about 800m from lifts and town. Is this the development you were thinking of? Puzzled

steve, Welcome . [ise knows more about this area tha anyone else `i've seen posting. There is no doubt that the Brits are into the Grand Massif and PdS in a big way. I've spent some time up there this summer and am amazed at the numbers/prices being paid but access and snow-sure probaby explains it. Interestingly , many locals think that the influx of Brits will reduce the pressure on the slopes as they do not look for such intensive letting - however their comments on MGM and Intrawest are less than favourable ( for the same reason! ).

At least you'll have a great ski school with 360International opening there this season ( and NO, I have no commercial interest!)

Thanks for the reply. One reason we chose Samoens was that it was more typically french than some resorts. -It seems a few other brits had the same idea! I think there is now a building limit in Samoens but the development in Flaine is a bit of a cloud on the horizon. I didn't find out about it until after our deal was done. Are 360 International that good (impressive Website!), do they cater for young kids as esf never seems to get that good a press?

steve, I wouldn't think the proposed Flaine development is any worse than any of the other stuff going on in the Alps , each to their own as they say. I'm sure many people said awful things about Les Arcs a few years ago but now it seems to have established its own strong following.

360 International that good (impressive Website!) I think it's possibly the world's worst website seing its objective is ( should be) to get punters to book !

I have few 'norms' to judge them against but have used 4 of their instructors, and compared to the British stuff in the area , I consider them a different ( better) class. One of them, Jocelyn , is the driving force behind Samoens( 'cos he lives there!) BUT his forte is free-ride and the park ( and his English is A1) . It is difficult to say what the Samoens operation will be like at the moment as apart from Joce I have no idea who will be instructing there. They will start with 4 instructors only this season. Their Les Gets operation is considered superb for kids AFAIK and they are the 'Retained' school for most/many of the local junior clubs /schools ( Annemasse/Annecy inter alia). P.S. In Samoens they will have an on-site creche which will be run by their ex-Les Gets 'administrative' ....

Thanks for the info, I'll give them a call as soon as I finalise my dates. However, as it's likely to be Feb half term I hope they have got enough capacity.
