Poster: A snowHead

Hi
Has anyone had any experience with getting orthotics, boot modifications or any other ski equipment modified to help them ski better after an ankle fusion operation?
I'd love to hear about your experiences.
Cheers
Eric

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

ericbass, sorry, didn't see this buried in here
we fit several people each season who have had various levels of fusion with ski boots, it really depends on the individual as to the results, often the hardest bit is getting into the boot in the first place, for this a 3 piece boot like the dalbello krypton can give good results
most important thing is to get the foot/ankle in a position where the pressure is not put on any particular ares (i.e. not to much pressure on the forefoot) so the boot needs to be built up inside to accommodate the foot in this best functioning position

I had an ankle fusion in 2012 and went skiing for the first time this March. My thing is ski touring- either hut to hut or day tours from the valley. I am a 66 year old reasonable intermediate skier and used to manage challenging snow conditions ok with the occasional wipe out. This time I found the skinning uphill
awkward if the slope got steep and spent a lot of time adjusting the heel raise on the fused side. Skiing was fine on a piste but off- piste I had real problems getting far enough forward to stay over my skis especially when the snow was deep or crusty. Anyone had any experience of boot or ski modifications to help with this?
On the positive side , I had no pain which was wonderful! My old Scarpa Laser boots were easy to get into as they are front entry.

Did you try skinning in ski mode?
This will stiffen up the boot and provide more support for your ankles.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Have you ever TRIED skinning uphill in ski mode??? the problem is not that my ankle needs support- it is safely fused at 90degrees but that it won't flex or extend. Thanks for the answer anyway.

I meant on your boots. Up until very recently I've been touring on downhill boots with no walk mode and find them fine.

@ericbass,
Eric, how did this turn out for you? I'm trying to find a high-level skier that has an ankle fusion.
Thanks,
Tim
