Poster: A snowHead
|
Google searches reveal:
- Austria: Snow tyres needed for ice slush and snow - but only if these occur up to 15th April.
- Germany: As above - but no dates mentioned.
What's my chances of needing snow tyres for the Germany bit? Is it all fairly low level roads if I drive directly south from Memmingen, via Fussen?
Sixt (best price via Travelsupermarket) are after £15 or £16 a day for snow tyres......

Tyres *
This regulation applies to all motorised vehicles using roads in Germany, including those registered abroad, so vehicles registered in the United Kingdom are affected. It is prohibited to use summer tyres in Germany during winter weather conditions - summer tyres are predominantly fitted to vehicles in the United Kingdom.
Winter weather conditions include black ice, snow, ice, slush and hoarfrost. Please bear in mind that these conditions may also be present even if the temperature is above 0 degrees.
German law specifies that the tyres must be winter tyres or all season tyres designed for use in wintry conditions. Suitable tyres will normally be marked 'M+S', however these can also be marked with a snow flake or snowy mountains symbol.
Motorists, whose car is equipped with summer tyres may not take the car on the road in winter weather conditions. Motorists in violation face fines of €40. If they actually obstruct traffic, the fine is €80. You may also be prevented from continuing your journey unless the tyres are changed or the weather conditions change.
From the AA website. Unless they have really, really freaky weather don't bother.

mountainaddict, in a word No to both!
The Austrians operate an O to O policy (Oktober bis Ostern = October to Easter) and the Germans are also sensible. Sudden weather can occur at any time of the year in the mountains, we have had snow in August before now! All of us were driving on summer tyres when it dumped on us in September last year and the spate of accidents that occurred gave the insurers a hard time but everyone paid up.

Samerberg Sue, Just got back from St Anton at the weekend, and took my winter tyres off the car on Sunday and got caught out this morning with 5cm spring powder in the Yorkshire Dales......oh how I laughed as I struggled up the non-gritted local lanes, stuck behind a Tesco truck as he slid all over the place!!

But I did buy a set of winter (M+S) tyres and not got round to using them. I'm flying out to St Anton at the weekend rather than driving, so no need this year!

I'm flying too!! My original post maybe wasn't clear - but we are flying into Memmingen then hiring a car.
Now thinking that I'll take a chance and not request snow tyres as an addition when I book the car. Will then check the forecast just before we go and amend the booking if necessary.
