Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How big are ski resorts

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just how big are ski resorts in the number of visitors they cater for. My rough idea, based upon counting the number of skier under the Grand Col lift in Les Arcs and scaling upwards is that Les Arcs has about 50-60 thousand skiers over the Christmas week but what is the capacity of the resort? Anyone know?

Well most publish figures for uplift capacity - as skiers per hour - e.g Les Arcs reckons 86604 skiers / snowboarders per hour. Of course most people will want to do more than one lift per hour, and it does depend upon the length of a lift - and do you count linked areas too? But I've never seen it quoted as vertical metres of uplift/hour which might be more relevant.

Number of beds would roughly do it. Number of ski pass days sold per season might be interesting.

johnE, The Annual report of Compagnie Des Alpes (who operate Les Arcs among others) is here.

Page 14, under 4.1.2 has visitor numbers of their various ski areas.

For 2010/11 the Paradiski area had 4.5 million skier days. If the season is approximately 150 days, then that averages out at approximately 30,000 per day. So double that at peak times seems quite likely, and your guesstimate probably wasn't too far out.

On page 16, they state that the Paradiski area has 98,000 tourist beds.

Thanks for that information Alex. After my original post I found the beds statistic on the paradi web site which says Les Arcs and La Plagne has 102,096 beds. A very precise number and I wonder if the factored in the sofa bed in our apartment to give 102,099 beds?

Though I searched the CDA web site I didn't find the fascinating report. Many thanks Alex, Why for example is paradiski 80% bigger than espace Killy. Are CDA not sole owners of espace Killy lift system?

However Paradiski, though technically linked, is not really one area like Espace Killy.
