Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Meribel or Tignes for April skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

Currently looking at some late ski deals for 7th April. Was wondering what peoples opinions were, especially for likely snow coverage which resort would be better Meribel or Tignes? Crowd of 4 Intermediate - Advanced skiiers who like to cover a lot of piste in a week.

Thanks,
Michael

Tignes would have much better snow coverage IMO.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Or what about Val Thorens? but am guessing that it would be the same story as Meribel

Tignes is higher therefore a slightly better bet for snow but Meribel has access to equally high pistes in the rest of the 3V's (eg, Val Thorens)...

Personally I'd be leaning towards Tignes for a better chance of doorstep skiing. But there's a good base this year so both may well be good.

Val Thorens would be a good bet as it is higher than Tignes and much higher than Meribel. I'd still be going to Tignes though as I've already been to Val Thorens this season wink

Ok so have found a good Val Thorens deal, so its between Val thoren and Tignes at the moment, costs are relatively the same.

So from what I am hearing we are more likely to have better snow coverage in Tignes?

Tignes. Meribel is likely to be one of the slushiest spots in the 3V.

so there is more skiing to do in 3V than Espace Killy but likely less snow in 3V in April? Puzzled

mickster, If it's now Tignes -v- Val T, I'd go Val T.

I think I'd probably still go to Tignes, but obviously Val T would be good too. Have a great time, either way!

I'd also still go for Tignes. Apart from the snow tending to hold up slightly better, the EK lift system copes better with peak crowds than the 3Vs, IMHO.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

mickster,

I have skied in both resorts in the last week and the snow is much better in Tignes.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

stewart woodward, surely that's a massive generalisation? Because one could be a bad year and one could be a good year... It's like saying "the snow is always bad in resort x" based on only a few visits.

edit: unless you're meaning Meribel vs Tignes in which case yeah sounds reasonable. I thought it'd changed to Tignes vs. VT.

Not really, 3V and EK are geographically quite close together and both are very high (Val Thorens particularly).

I would be surprised if there was significantly less snow in Val Thorens than in Tignes at the end of April based on a year-on-year average. Igluski shows broadly similar snow depths anyway.

The stuff about the lift systems is of course another matter.

 You know it makes sense.

bobmcstuff, I guess what SW means is that actually, right now, this year, the snow is much better in Tignes than in the 3V. That information is pretty useful for the OP!

Thanks for all the advice! Went and booked with Val Thorens in the end!
