Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looking for a decent Austrian resort with shortest drive from UK

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Planning our next seasons trip and we are looking to get a self catering apartment somewhere in Austria. As we are driving from the UK ideally it would be to the west a bit to reduce the driving times.
Can anyone recommend a resort that well priced in that area?

Thanks

Chris

Check out the montafon. It's in western Austria and is lovely. I rented a flat there cheaply through interhome.

I would think SkiWelt would be an easy journey, 950km from Ostend to Kufstein.

Intermediate level of snowboarding for me and the son and things to do for the wife and mum in law not snow related.

Had two weeks in St Anton this year so not too keen to return already as the hangover is still hanging around Laughing

Also this will be for feb half term!!

Will try the Stuben and Lech sites

Onpiste? Kitzbuehel would be well worth a look, and would have more non-ski stuff to do. Would also be worth looking into basing yourself in Innsbruck and skiing a few different areas - many are on the same lift pass. As you'll have a car transport won't be a problem, but there are good ski bus services if you wanted a few beers at teh end of the day.

Like your thinking Matt. On and off piste would be good so a nice selection of each.

Hi Surfstar.
We are trying Maria Alm which is part of the ski amade at half term next season. Apparently not used much by the brits more German and Austrians. Next year most of the Germans and Austrians are on holiday the week before ( festival week) so hoping it won't be too busy !
Supposed to be a family resort and have heard that kids ski school is good. Maria Alm is a village so might be nice for the M.i.Law
Driving and Self catering in a large 2 bed apartment which is definately costing less than something of a similar size in France in Feb.

IwishICouldThinkOfAFabNam, skied there last week and have to say I was blown away by the place. Nice variety of slopes, long runs, excellent infrastructure and some fantastic mountain restaurants. Also very easy for non-skiers to meet up with skiers for lunch.

I had not visited the Hochkönig for about 20+ years, despite skiing virtually every week close by. I was blown away by the views and huge vistas.

You will have a ball!

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Also Fiss/Serfaus/Ladis could be a possibility. Fairly Westerly, haven't skied there but looks decent on the map. Close to Landeck and easy for non-skiers to get there for a change of scenery (and/or then onto Innsbruck).

Good call the Montafon............... Schruns, Golm, Gargellen, Gashurn, Silvretta Nova. Skied it years ago and thought the whole area quaint! Not combined areas, but with car a good drive/ski option.

Lech is close by, and Klosterle.

If you're looking for a family ski holiday in Western Austria then look no further than Serfaus/Fiss/Ladis, there's a couple of trip reports etc on a recent thread on here if you have a quick search. We went in February and will be going again next year.

surfstar,
We've been fly driving to Kappl for a few years now which is reasonably priced and has a very pleasant medium/ small sized ski area of it's own and is just down the valley from the rather pricier Ischgl which is where we usually end up skiing.

Are any of these suggestions fairly safe bets snow-wise for Xmas/New year?

Yep. Particularly Ischgl, but in general Western Tirol is one of the safest bets in Europe.

surfstar We are heading to St Gallenkirch, Montafon next Friday, total of approx 950km (just under 600 miles) from Dunkirk. Haven't skied there before but the whole area ticked many of our boxes which run similar to yours. We dont mind the fact that its not linked and actually enjoy a few drives to different less popular places. Also found some very reasonable accommodation and there still lots available! May even do a day or two in a resort out of the valley (Klosters appeals!)

Plan a sensible 9am ferry, then a 6/7 hour drive to somewhere between Stuttgart and Ulm, cheap hotel ready to get kitted up in the morning and the last hours drive straight to the slopes for an early start. Check in comes after skiing Smile

andyman, did something similar in February. Stopped in Kongen which is just past Stuttgart - Hotel am Neckartal. Dead easy to find off the motorway, reasonably priced, and cracking breakfast.

Tirol Neckartal did look very nice (Thanks) but as we need a triple it was not possible.

Now booked into a place in Ulm centre.

Fingers crossed for some epic show in Montafon (and that the toboggan run is open it looks unbelievable Smile )
