A design student from the University of New South Wales in Australia has invented a ski helmet with a 'soft' shell. Named 'Yolk' by its creator, Gregory Scott, the helmet is aimed to "overcome the unfashionable image that helmets seem to have with the young-at-heart on the ski slopes of the world" - according to this report (with photos) from Gizmag.

It was all going well till I saw the bit about earphones. What stupid plonker wants to invent something that enourages slope users to be LESS aware of others on the slopes around them

Wouldn't have thought that soft helmets would be all that popular.......
On a serious note, I could see a design like that really catching on, and if the fashion conscious amongst us are more likely to wear head protection, it can only be a good thing n'est-il pas? As for the comment about earphones, many, many people already have music blaring away in earplugs, so I don't really see the relevance.

If he just made it look like a normal beanie, with no earphones, fur, or weird shape in general, I'd think it would do much better, even if it didn't offer quite the same level of protection due to slightly less coverage.
