Everywhere needs better/more snow all the time.
If only someone could invent snowfall every night that comes in nice and moist and stable, instantly consolidates with the existing pack to a buttery finish, topping off with a bit of real fluff (but not enough to get windloaded). Then I might run out of excuses

I don't have any clips, but my 118mm's are happier making short turns than my 92mm's. No way I'd be taking the bigger ones out if I knew I was skiing pistes all day though (unless there was more than 15/20cm of fresh snow on them). That's more to do with flex than width though, the 92mm's are much happier making more GS style turns (funnily enough it's the other way around in powder!).
I haven't spent much time at Soll, but I've had several weeks in Westendorf where I've spent probably at least 50% of the time offpiste. That was all on hired piste skis though, before I got my own.

Something around the mid 80s I've found to be a very good compromise to go all over with equal amounts of fun on hardpack powder and everything in between.
If you can get the stiffness right for you, something with this width can still be lively on piste but also equal fun in powder, like others have said you can be in the snow but still have easy control without having to over think things.

Now the 92mm twins - which I find is fine with beginners (which is all I teach). I don't find them any worse for teaching than the 80mm Legend 8000s I used to have anyway. Probably not suitable for teaching anyone who's ahd more than three weeks or so skiing before though.
I did buy some Atomic SX11 piste skis from Arno, but found them too hard work to use for lessons, they like the speed.

The guy from Snoworks in St Anton looked at my Dynastar Legends (75 under foot, not rockered - an old model) and said I would do better to hire some wider skis for off-piste. I was a bit disappointed with that verdict, bearing in mind that I'm not about to travel on ski holidays with more than one pair of skis and I don't particularly want to incur hire charges either. So far they've performed adequately for me in all conditions; perhaps a little noodly on hard pack, because they're so light, but not excessively so. I suppose the truth is that there's no such thing as an all-mountain ski. On balance, I'm probably happy with prioritizing an improvement in my technique over shelling out on new gear.

my new 92mm MSPs are the first ski i've thought no matter what the conidtions today i can beast it..sweet. In fact most enjoyable ski i've skied on piste for a long time..as well.

Pedantica, it's a ski, Salomon BBR. Comes range of options, with an all-mountain bias. Distinctive because of the big surfboard like tip and a relatively narrow tail on most of the models.

Czar with a Baron acts as a raiser plate and gives a reasonable turning ski on piste considering its 43mtr turn radius. I would say that a reasonable amount of technique and effort is also needed.

Maybe I'd best stop thinking! I find, generally, that threads on sHs which get me thinking, also invariably involve large expenditure!

I was being a bit tongue in cheek. I still use a 100+, trad camber, no rocker, medium/stiff flex as my everyday ski. I just pray there's no boiler plate!! But it's a real eye opener to get back on a pair of SL's now and again and realise how bad the others are on piste.

Mosha Marc, Sounds like my ski apart from being 98mm they are sub 100. I like getting on a pair of SL's, they are amazing on ice, but for all round use I love my mid fats. I have taken them to a 3 degree side and 0.75 base angle, at least it gives me a fighting chance on ice, although in Dec on a mogul field of ice I wiped out most turns as they just would not grip

Well I took my SL-Rs out on saturday for the first time this season and had a ball. So much more fun on piste!

There was no powder or off-piste skiing in Cervinia last week, but I did see a fair few fat skis about. All Brits of course. It seems only Brits care about having the latest equipment, performance-fitted boots, stupidly expensive gear. The Italians seem quite happy with their old stuff plus they can go skiing every weekend rather than once or twice a year.

This is a good benchmark for working out the difference in grip that can be obtained on piste, for those who have only ever used wider all mountain and run of the mill piste skis, its worth trying some SLs with good edges to really gauge what you really want from an all mountain ski.

I suppose the locals and those who can travel by car (e.g. Germans, Dutch etc) can take multiple pairs of skis and have the better tool for the job on the day. Gnarly off piste is where it's at so the Brit skier takes his newly purchased fat soft skis in the hope it will dump while he/she is there. More times than not they end up using a powder ski where a piste or 'all-mountain ski' would be the better tool for the job. Of course if he/she leaves the powder skis at home, sod's law says it will dump.

No Off piste skiing? Really? was it all fenced off???
Off piste is a lot more than fresh tracks in fluffy powder, I suspect there was plenty of very enjoyable spring snow to be found off piste in Cervinia, with maybe some variable snow to get to the right pitches, all areas where width helps IMHO.....
