Poster: A snowHead
|
A design student from the University of New South Wales in Australia has invented a ski helmet with a 'soft' shell. Named 'Yolk' by its creator, Gregory Scott, the helmet is aimed to "overcome the unfashionable image that helmets seem to have with the young-at-heart on the ski slopes of the world" - according to this report (with photos) from Gizmag.

['Yolk' is] flexible and conformable to the user’s head but when subjected to an impact it instantaneously forms a rigid shell dispersing and absorbing the energy . This is achieved utilising a semi- rigid liner and a Kevlar skin which is impregnated with a shear thickening fluid. ‘Yolk’ can be fitted with of a choice of skins which can be stretched over the liner to match the user’s personal style. |

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

That's a very clever idea, I've heard of similar technology being developed for "Bulletproof" clothing so it sshould work

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It was all going well till I saw the bit about earphones. What stupid plonker wants to invent something that enourages slope users to be LESS aware of others on the slopes around them
Sorry. Rant over.

Manda, I guess he's just copying the helmet producers who do the same thing, I think that ideas a little stupid as well, but then I like the peace and quiet of the mountains

Wouldn't have thought that soft helmets would be all that popular.......
On a serious note, I could see a design like that really catching on, and if the fashion conscious amongst us are more likely to wear head protection, it can only be a good thing n'est-il pas? As for the comment about earphones, many, many people already have music blaring away in earplugs, so I don't really see the relevance.

huckingfellers, indeed!
If he just made it look like a normal beanie, with no earphones, fur, or weird shape in general, I'd think it would do much better, even if it didn't offer quite the same level of protection due to slightly less coverage.
