so it looks like things are hotting up this week. bright blue skies and freezing point well above 3,000m
i've very little experience of skiing in such glorious weather, so apart from a bit of a tan, what is this weather going to do to conditions, considering the ample snow already on the ground - over 2m in resort at present.
Clearly there'll be plenty of snow, but what will conditions be like? will i need armbands?
Going to La Rosiere on Sunday for a week
Would welcome some comment from those in the know
At least the kids wont freeze!

conditions will probably be icy and hard pistes in the morning and slushy in the afternoon. If you don't mind that, it sounds like a pleasant week, with high potential for slopeside beers wearing a t shirt in the afternoon.

Try to chase the sun round the mountain and you can still ski nice snow all day. Let the sun soften it a little without turning it to mush.
Armbands probably not, but headbands and aviators, perhaps!?

dudders, we were in the 3Vs last season when it was around 10ºC on the hill and glorious sun all week and not a lot of snow... one of the best ski trips I've ever had.
This year I'd love to ski in similar weather, but with all this snow it should be even better!
We don't fly until March 11th, so plenty time for more snow to arrive, but wouldn't mind either way... beats sitting in the office!

sitting in dense fog with the hill closed beats sitting in the office, so very much looking forward to it either way!

La Rosiere has a special micro climate whoch keeps all snow at the perfect temperature , ensures powder all season even in a drought season and keeps the unicorns and fluffy bunnies gambolling through the meadows. Or at least that's what I've read on sHs.
In the real world I'd say it'll be great if it corns properly more ho-hum if it doesn't.

Heading out to La Rosiere this Saturday for a week also. Have spent the last few weeks wondering whether I needed to stock up on some more layers, but by the look of it, I'm going to need plenty of suncream and a few t-shirts!
Am sure it will start to get a bit slushy in resort in the afternoon, as it does get busy there anyway. But, it is high enough that the snow should hold on long enough to get a week of pretty much perfect skiing!

We skied in about 24C in Les Arcs last year at the beginning of April. It was even about 12C up on the Aiguille Rouge.
I skied in a t-shirt and salopettes for 3 days, and the delightful young ladies from SCUM were skiing in bikini tops and shorts. It was fantastic, was even quite fun getting up and over huge mounds of sugar. Luckily it cooled mid week otherwise we'd have been on a walking holiday for the last few days.
Bit of a ball ache though trekking from our chalet to the nearest lift carrying all our kit when it's that warm though, was sweating buckets.
Yet went to Alpe D'Huez in July and nearly got hypothermia.

You know it makes sense.

i saw it was going to get warm for a while, but read somewhere (can't find it now) that said it was going to get 'relatively' warm.
I don't think they meant 10 degrees or so, but compared to recent temps!
I'll see where i can find it.
have just looked at snow-forecast site for the first time. Excellent - looks good.

dudders, without wanting to get all techie (as my knowledge on this subject is limited!) check out this graph. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/MS_745_ens.png
The thick red line is the 30 year average temperature for a weather station near Sauze d'Oulx. The thick green line is the forecasted temperature, as you can see the green line is well above the red line, so yes it's warm for the time of year. But it's topping out at about 11c so it's not going to be baking hot, it's also a week away, which won't be hugely reliable. Also this weather station will probably be in a valley, rather than up a mountain.
If you're interested further the thick green line on the bottom of the graph shows rainfall (or snow if it's cold enough), there's none forecast in the short term.

dudders,
It's true that it is much warmer than a couple of weeks back but it's all relative and they were probably comparing it to the sub minus 20 temps we had a couple of weeks ago. I'm skiing on Friday at a resort that was approx. 30 deg C cooler two weeks ago (-22 v +8. ). Other than a warm friday this week it just looks like temps have corrected to be slightly above the season norm.

Guys don't forget that those temperatures will be in the shade, in the sun it will be a lot warmer! Was sitting outside my apartment in Tignes in a t-shirt and shorts yesterday.
