Lots of suggestions for good places above, one other TO that does do departures that week is Ski Olympic - www.skiolympic.co.uk - they do Tignes, Les Arc, La Plagne, Courchevel, La Ros & Les Menuires at least that week from looking at their site

Did Obergurgl mid April two years ago and am again there the week before you want to go this year. Snow was absolutely fine and I think they were still running the cannons overnight to top up. Best skiing higher up and as always it all depends on the weather. Added insurance of the Solden glacier just down the road, or as a straight alternative. There are some amazing snow depths about this year (not Obergurgl yet). Not sure of the relevance for April of this at this early stage but someone else may be able to comment.

Verbier closes the last sunday in April.
We have been there for closing weekend every year for several years and had everything from mega slush to deep fresh powder on closing day.
This year the current depths are at an all time record.
I'd bet my shirt on tha fact that you will still be able to ski the whole mountain, top to bottom...though it might be slush if the temps are up. What you will not do is run out of snow.
It is a really mellow vibe that weekend, evreybody is so chilled out and friendly, one of my favourite times to ski.
Last year it was so hot that every day was like two holidays:
Ski from 10.30 to 2.00 (any earlier was boiler plate ice, any later was just too slushy).
Then on to the balcony in shorts with a book....for summer holiday style sunbathing....and it was HOT!

Zermatt would be my first choice, though most (but conspicuously not all, I'll leave you to guess which) of the suggestions here are good ones. I think it's best at the end of the season as it needs the accumulation of snow to cover up a lot of the rocks. Plus it's so high that cold or bad weather makes the higher areas almost unskiable.
But not sure how well the different areas link once the snow line starts heading north. Ive been there in mid April and pretty much everything was open. The scenery is so fantastic, and when it's warm and sunny there is nowhere better to loiter about and look at the peaks/glaciers etc.
Try the youth hostel or bahnhof if the vast expense and crippling exchange rates put you off. Tannenhof is a nice cheap bed and breakfast hotel, and the hotel with the north pole bar is OK too.
Of course, at that time of year, the best thing is to just wait till the week before and then check - the snow conditions will still be quite widely reported on this site and the weather forecasts for up to 7 days ahead are normally pretty accurate. Surely everywhere will still have some rooms at that sort of notice ?

pendodave, I've done Zermatt in the last 2 weeks of a season (on a BASI course) and I'd take Val Thorens at that time of year over Zermatt any day.

Riksgransen in Sweden. Skiing until late May. Amazing setting and experience. You can fly to Olso and then up to Halstad/Narvik (SAS or Norwegian.) The hotel is not cheap but there is a hostel, which is very comfy and has private rooms. Flying into Narvik absolutely stunning. You can rent a car and the drive is only an hour or so. I think we rented through Rhino or CarHire3000. Having the car also lets you ski Narvik itself. Really worth looking into for a completely different trip with enjoyable skiing.
