Apparently, the 3V is a skiercross ski, the Crossmax V12 a freeride ski, the Scrambler 8 a Big Mountain / Freestyle ski and the Zenith Z9 a piste prestige ski.

Whereas, the reality is more like:
3V: After effects of a good curry
Xmax: After effects of a bad pint
Scrambler 8: After effects of your sick dog eating the left over curry, spilt pint, and a load of laxatives.

I think in the US the same jacket costs $1,000 and comes with a free iPod. In S&R it's £1,000 and no iPod. Perhaps S&R use a different exchange rate mechanism to the rest of us!
Also spotted that S&R no longer sell the Metron B5 but have started to sell the Stockli Stormrider.

In fairness, they did sell the Stockli lat year too. The B5 decision does seem odd though, maybe it wouldn't fit neatly in their categories.

Or it could be that they were rubbish.
I testde the Metron B5's last year a few times while i was doing a season as a ski host. They were possibly the worst skis i've ever tried. They made a horrible tinny/metalic noise that made you feel like you had two tea trays stuck to your feet

I'm not that surprised. They didn't sell well for them last year - in part because their salespeople didn't rate them I suggest. It was only at sales time that  s bought them I think. They had more B5 stock in April in their Covent Garden shop than I saw in all of the alpine shops I visited.

Yes they were heavily discounted. They were also on sale in Hinterrglemm when I was there.
The SCGB magazine was not that enthusiastic about them in their group tests either . The shops try to stock what they think will sell. If the B5 was a flop they will not stock it the following season. They are in business to make money.

I wanted their big brothers but as i was working as a ski host i was not really skiing for myself too much and to get the best out of them would have meant speeds which most of my guests couldn't have coped with. Also with safety in mind, during feb half term skiing that fast is just not responsible in most places.

Just noticed that you can't get a high end Volkl from S&R as they don't carry either the Allstar's or Superspeed's or the AC3 or 4's. Shame as S&R probably consider themselves as the premier high street ski retailer.
A £1000 Spyder jacket. What are they playing at? The items they've selected from the vast Spyder range to offer to UK customers are likely to put punters off the brand for life. They've even dropped the best Spyder item they had last year, the Raider Vest.

Agree totally with that comment, as us Spyder wearers know, the kit is some of the best available, and in the whole range there is some relatively good priced items. Looks like we will have to order from across the pond.

I see that they're now selling the M11 instead of the b5 which is probably a better bet commercially than the b5, especially as EB's are no longer stocking Atomics. If Ellis Brigham no longer stock Atomic, it suggests that there is another retailer who did not make a profit on their skis.

Latchigo, manufacturing costs haven't risen, but due to the lower sales of skis in the UK (according to the latest wholesaler information I've been given), the manufacturers and retailers are trying to increase their profits on boots.

Wear The Fox Hat, I happened to be introduced to a 'Director' of S&R during the summer. Having latched on to the poor soul due to my obsessive interest, I was told that their boot sales last year were SIGNIFICANTLY up on previous years while sales of skis were very disappointing.
i.e. Never forget the concept of 'Making Hay while the sun shines'
If that person is reading this forum they will remember where and when and they may get one of their folks to respond with facts.

eEvans, ski sales being very disappointing is a bit of an understatment - I've heard figures being quoted of >75% reduction in sales since 5 years ago. (one source said it was close to 90% reduction on 1998 stats!)

Wear The Fox Hat, I didn't want to quote the numbers I heard as they were in a social environment and unsubstantiated .
But your figures for skis are close ( but 1/2 your numbers year-on-year ) and boot sales a similar increase.

I'm probably wrong on this but I think that the apparent increasing specialist nature of skis isn't helping ski sales. It appears that the manufacturers, retailers, self-anointed (oops -appointed) experts and others have difficulty in defining and agreeing these categories. The great skiing hoi poli, of which I am a long established member, may think twice before spending their dosh on something which is great in one set of ill-defined conditions and completely useless in everything else and will instead put their trust in the resort hire shops to provide them with the appropriate kit.
My own requirement is for a ski that is around 80% at the everything. I'm happy to forego the 20% of perfection. Such skis may not exist but the current categories in the catalogues certainly don't help me in my search for my "ideal" skis and as a consequence I'll probably put off buying a new pair.

In that case, I hope people will vote with their feet and walk away from ski boot purchases.
I hope the retailers get stock with a lot of unsold gear. Times are supposed to be tough in the High Street now, so no need to encourage the likes of Snow and Rock - especially if you already own a pair of reasonable boots.

In addition, the budget airlines recent(ish) decision to charge for ski carriage also makes hiring more attract for the 1-2 weeks a season skier.

spyderjon, Agreed and I intend to use this in my (domestic) cost justification for driving rather than flying. I hate the airport hassle, transfers etc et al and I can now add this 5 x £15 to £30 for ski carriage for the family holidays to my case (but I know I will fail – as always).

Please tell me I'm doing something wrong... about 80% of the stuff is kids, and the remaining 20% is womens stuff!
Good job I live outside the UK, with a choice of wintersports stockists within walking distance (except they aren't quite into the winter phase yet).
