I'm investigating the possibility of arranging a family holiday, with a few beginners and a few more seasoned skiers on the Canadian East coast.
I'm looking at late November or December 2012. What resorts would you suggest? Resorts closer to Toronto would be favourable, although I know it's probably at least 8 hours from Toronto to the nearest resort.
Thanks in advance.

The biggest east coast resort is M.Tremblant, but thats near Montreal. Never been, but heard it's a good mountain, but town is a bit themepark.
Couldn't name you one near Toronto - assume you've chosen Toronto as a base for non-ski reasons...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Richard_Sideways, absolutely. The primary reason for going is not for skiing. I was looking at Mont Tremblant, seemed ok until you mentioned "theme park".
I think we'd be really happy with a small, friendly, local sort of village/resort rather than a theme park...any thoughts?

Feast, Toronto is in Ontario and its flat round Toronto, I think highest vertical drop is around 200m, not a good reason for a skiing holiday,, but why Toronto Mont Tremblant is the best in the eastern Canada, and also the first skiresort that was built in Northern Amerika by french immigrants, its a little more than 2h driving from Montreal and as you say more than 8h from Toronto,, and its a real gambling with the east Canada so early in season

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yeah, that's what I was concerned about. What about conditions around Christmas time? Any more reliable?
We are going to Toronto for a relations birthday, so just trying to fit some skiing in really.

ok, not much more than a quick google but this may be helpful
http://www.showmetoronto.com/toronto_travel_ontario_ski_resor.htm
List of ontario ski hills with websites...
freeheelskier's kinda hit the nail on the head there - it's not a particularly mountainous region.
If none of the links on that site float your boat then why not get an internal flight to Calgary or Vancouver during your stay...

Feast, OK then is more easy to give advice, there is a local hill 30km from center of Toronto, Oshawa Ski Club, only verticaldrop of 100m, but 12 skilifts, and 3 of them are chairlifts. There is also Blue Mountain, alittle more than 2h drive north, verticaldrop of 220m 35 pistes and 11 chairlifts, but they dont use to open before around xmas, rest skiresort will be to long to drive to, no idea realy, they had no better skiing than the indoor skiing you had in england, if you dont want to drive more than 8h, have a good time, Toronto is a fantastic town, and try to have tickets for NHL Hockey, even if you dont know about hockey it will be a great memory for you,,,

Most Toronto folk get on a plane to Calgary or Vancouver when they really want to go skiing. & make sure you tell everyone the Leafs suck.

If you have to be in Toronto, enjoy Toronto and skip the going skiing part. It's not worth the effort to travel a long distance to try to ski in anything resembling close proximity to Toronto. Best bet in eastern Canada is Quebec City. Usually quite reliable for snow early in the season. Mont Ste. Anne and Le Massiff are the best options in that part of Quebec. You'd want to fly from Toronto to Quebec City. It's a long and boring drive otherwise. Second the theme part on Mont Tremblant. Too much French Canadian kitsch.

Feast,
Why not go cross-country skiing? There are plenty of trails not too far from Toronto, and it's a great way to get some fresh air and exercise in the middle of winter. There should be enough snow for this in December.
My first ever experience on skis was when I was working at the University of Toronto, and we had a departmental outing to a cross-country ski area.

I'd love to go to Le Massif - I hear it's got the best VD on the eastern side of North America, and the views of the ice floes in the St Lawrence from the pistes are incredible. Plus, I read they've just opened a new railway to the resort from Quebec. Sounds like my winter sports paradise!
