Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Sunday's Camera Trick?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Did anyone else spot the possible deception in today's SS? I just played it back and did a few freeze frames just to make sure. I don't think it was Graham Bell that did the course run even though they said it was and showed shots of his head while apparently on the course. Thing is, the ski tips that kept coming into shot off jumps were Fischer and he definitely ended the run on a pair of Atomics (with camera mount near the tip, which the Fischers did not have). Unless he did a quick change at huge speed, I reckon it was someone else shooting the footage, probably Hans Knauss.

So, it begs the question - does GB normally pretend to do the run or was this week a one-off for some strange reason, in which case, why pretend?

I spotted the Fischers on the way down - didn't notice the switch though.

GB is linked to Atomic, see Theorys in later shots, I too noticed the Fischers and thought odd. The training was disrupted so perhaps he didn't get a slot so had to do a Clarkson.

Such shots may well be the result of a few days filming. Bad continuity, that's all.

^^^ Inclined to agree with that. I do wonder how many times he's fallen on those runs and if whether a change of skies was required. Likewise I'm sure the ski up to camera in finish area was repeated a few times.

+2 to Boris and bar shaker. Pretty sure he's capable, don't see why they'd bother? If they were going to do that, why not just show helmet cam footage of a pro going down and have him commentate over it? (like Formula One etc.)

bobmcstuff, I'm pretty certain it wasn't GB wearing the Fischers. It was this guy...

Hans Knauss does the camera runs for ORF. Just wondering why they went to so much trouble to over dub GB's commentary and try and fool us when it would have been perfectly OK to say that it was someone else doing the run.

hans knauss has been doing lots of stuff like this, as you say why dub the cometary why not just buy the footage

Maybe half GB's footage turned out to be bollox so they had to use other stuff to make up the piece... Maybe.

Struggling to see why they'd bother filming the bits with GB's face during the commentary etc., seems like a lot of effort.

The run starts from 06:38. Seems to me they went to a lot of trouble to make it look and sound like it was GB. Try watching it knowing what you know now...

It's the BBC with their track record are you expecting truth honesty and decency?

Given the very cold temps recently it's entirely possible that there were technical problems with the camera, quite possible to combine the footage from both sources, but they should have said something

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Look at the opening shot where GB has his main camera aimed at his face. The shot is all blurred. So a plausible explanation is that GB did the run but his main camera had issues which meant the footage wasn't up to broadcast quality. So instead of wasting the footage from the other cameras and missing the course run, or subjecting the audience to some tedious explanation about camera issues and how Graham did do the run but they had to splice in footage from Hans Knauss because blah blah blah... they just did the sensible and pragmatic thing and spliced some front facing views from ORF with GBs own viable footage to make a complete course run.

Obviously they knew that some pedant would spot the brief flash of Hans' skis but it was the best option in a sticky situation with a deadline looming.

(Only a hypothesis obviously but what seems more likely, BBC concoct great Graham Bell course run conspiracy to con viewers, its Blue Peter all over again, or simple error requires some fixing, you decide!)

Flet©h, exactly. Also, listening to his commentary, he'd have to be an actor of rare talent to fake that.

What next? David Attenborough creeping up on stuffed polar bears? It would have been far easier if they'd just said.

Bode Swiller, far easier for who? It gave you something to pedanticate about didn't it? Just think how boring your Sunday evening/Monday morning would have been without obsessing about weather BG actually did the downhill camera shot.

Really? I'd say I'm fairly (read: very Embarassed) pedantic, I even noticed the Fischers and though, "thats weird, I though GBs skis were Atomics" and then didn't give it a moment of though aferwards. I'd have though its unlikely that the 99.9% of the viewers who don't have the perfect storm of pedantry and ski geekery snowHead would have even noticed.

So why waste 30 secs of program time (over 1% of the whole program) explaining something that nobody cares about and is completely incidental to your enjoyment of the program?

Saturday Kitchen this is not.

you mean in the same way they wasted many minutes trudging up to a monastery? It was fairly interesting but the getting there was over long.

and that's the point... knowing that, they thought it easier to produce a fairly elaborate lie rather than just say "we were cursed by the weather for Graham's course run so here's the one by HK and GB will talk you through it". I'd rather the BBC were just straight. That's not pedantry.

As Harry Field's father said "How do you know any of it is real" "A fake only disappoints when found out" It would certainly explain though why his run was slow even Ivica cannot make their DH skis go quick.

I was amazed he could ski that fast and jump that far while holding the camera, and I'm always impressed by GB's filmed runs. This felt like another level of performance, I was brickin' it for him! So it makes sense they might have spliced it with a faster run for some reason. Ach well, still a great feature.

i was quite impressed with GB's pivot slips on the narrow road when they got back to Aosta

i was also very impressed that he was still wearing Mike Ahsley's anorak on that hike up into the horrible weather

balernoStu, Oh he really can ski that fast with a camera, trouble is they probably only get one chance to film the race track this way so if there's a technical fault they end up having to splice in someone else's footage
