Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi All,

I've managed to go down with a cold - grr don't need this a week before I go to avoriaz.....

anyhow, I'm therfore considering doing some retail-therapy, but should I try to buy ski goggles in the UK or wait till I'm in the resort ? I kind of assume everything will be expensive in Avoriaz ???? the cheapo goggles i allready have are not too good when it's really sunny.

I may also need recommendations of good bars/food places if i'm less likely to do lots of skiing.... also, anywhere likely to have UK rugby (6-nations) TV on in avoriaz ?

Pamski, ever tempted to move them? Laughing

I have moved skis from outside the Yeti - the ones strewn right in the middle of the piste that is. Not too far, just to make the area safe and to cause frustration for the owner Toofy Grin

fatgaz, think postive! You have a whole week to get over your cold or is it man flu? wink I would buy goggles here I think, better value.

Lou, well probably yes, and if I was strong enough all those people who completely block the entry to the lifts - and even worse those who get right up to the gates to get on the lift, and then look round gormlessly for their companions.... a few of those around today.

fatgaz, I am sure you will be fine in a week's time - lots of honey and lemon, and a good tot of port. If you have time then its probably worth sorting out your goggles in advance, if only so that you don't waste time when you get here. Don't forget to take your helmet with you though so they fit together... if you have one.

fatgaz, I went down with the lurgi just before Christmas and had a miserable drive out on Dec 23/24. That said I wasn't going to miss five days on the slopes so just got on with it. By the time I was home I was fine whereas Mrs DJL (who had spend the time mooching round the village and drinking coffee -off games with a bad foot - can't get the ski boot on at the moment) has had a cold ever since and is still coughing.

Don't miss time on skis!

I would have thought there will be somewhere. Naturally of course if France are playing then that is what will be on, but I recall watching an England-Ireland game in Morzine once. Never stayed in Avoriaz but I would be surprised if there isn't at least one bar/restaurant showing it. Or there may be a TV in your apartment?

I have just had a note from a friend with a couple of chalet along the road from us in Les Gets. It seems that break-ins are happening again. We have a safe for cash, cards and passports which we must make sure we are using! She says:
One of my chalets was broken into through smashing the wooden window frame from the
balcony! Wife of renter was out and came back 1 hr later to discover all ccards, cash, iphone, ipads, laptop, taken plus keys from keybox in hall. They eventook a suitcase to carrying it all away! Jean Francois opposite rang
gendarmes and went back to chalet with her in case they were still there!
Cleaners are there this morning and checking over in case anything else
missing. Clients flew home last night. Now having to get a new window made.
Insurance Pacifica had artisan to come but not until monday to close up
window!

Jean Claude Delavay, the ski instructor and lock smith came last night to
replace keys, his tel 0612 242440 in case, but obviously I sincerely hope
not, if you need locks changed! He is also a bit of a carpenter but I dont
think can remake a window.
He said he is doing less skiing because he is having 3-4 breakins per week
during the season and in big demand as lock smith!
Just to warn you to keep your eyes open especially after last year!

Petit Casino were burgaled in their 1st floor apt while in the shop!

Well that's it, yesterday saw me and my 2 girls at the Castleford Big Fridge for their last practice session before Morzine in 2 weeks. They've both skied before, one twice and one just the once, but this was 6 years ago when one was 3 and one was 5 (and was a bit of a disaster if I'm honest - cold and snowy every day, massive kindergarten class in Flaine, younger one got expelled for biting the instructor etc etc). However they seem to have taken to it quite well now - had a series of 4 lessons then have been for 3x2hr practices and both can confidently (the younger one perhaps too confidently...) get down the main slope at Cas, traverse, turn, stop etc. Their ski school at Avoriaz (Freedom2Ski) asked that we give them a few practice sessions then they're not starting completely from scratch - so I'm hoping they pass muster on their first day.

So - in 2 weeks we'll be in Morzine for the first time (I'm a Chamonix "old hand" but never been to PdS. Chalet is on Route des Oudrezants(?), lessons are up in Avoriaz. Mid week meal booked at l'Etale (I think).

So a few questions... Assume there'll be hods of stuff for us to ski on in the mornings (their lessons are at 2)? We've been told to go to Zore etc on the first morning for a practice. Also someone mentioned going up to Crossettes and down to Les Lindarets as a good long blueish run. Anywhere else? Particularly for a last day "adventure" (we'll have a lesson free day at the end)?

Also non-skiing activities? I'm hoping they'll want to ski all day every day, but they may want to do something else at some point - skating? I understand there's an indoor pool now too? Anything else we could look out for?

And I know not under any circumstances to take them to some dump called Changabang for lunch, as it's awful, unhygienic and the curly fries are simply dreadful. wink

Pamski, not good news. I hope they catch the thieving gits although that's not much consolation for ruining a holiday and huge hassle for owners.

To be fair she was only 3, and didn't want the instructor to put her gloves on (apparently - we were summoned from somewhere up the hill).

I think it's unlikely she'd bite anyone now - possibly talk them into submission...

andy from embsay, Route des Udrezants is on the Avoariz side of Morzine, so you'll either need to drive up to Prodains or get the ski bus up to Prodain.

If you want a last day "adventure" then I'd suggest skiing going over to the Morzine side, skiing over to Les Gets, hitting the Indian Village in Les Gets (always a big hit with kids and near the top of the Chavenettes and Croix chair lifts) and then head over to Mont Chery and book lunch in the La Grande Ourse at the very top of Mont Chery. If the kids are skiing at a reasonable speed then I'd start from Prodains and head over to Super Morzine - which will make it feel like it's further than it is.

The alternative is to ski over to Switzerland. But if I'm honest, most kids I know prefer the Indian Park to the Swiss wink

L'Etale is a good place for a mid-week meal - lots of stuff for both adults and kids. One of our favourite places for a mixed crowd as there's always something to please everyone.

andy from embsay wrote:

It's Mossettes and (for the the avoidance of any doubt whatsoever) you want the French side(!), which you get to from the Prolays run, which you get to from the Tour chair, which is just down from the Prodains cable car.

Have a curly fry or two for me wink

Cheers FS - I'd looked at getting some mileage in over there in Les Gets with them and the Indian Village looks like a hoot.

Didn't understand the bit about starting from Prodains though?

We get dropped off each morning at the lift of our choice, so we'll probably go from Super Morzine on the first day or two (although where are the worst queues? I don't think we'll be super early tbh) - that way we can pootle on Zore and Serrausaix etc before avoiding Changabang at lunchtime.

And gotcha on Mossettes - me and my mates will probably get ourselves reasonably well acquainted with the area whilst they're ski-schooling.

andy from embsay, the Indian Village is fantastic. Unfortunately they get "sniffy" if kids don't take you there. Bloody cheek I say - they can ski our pistes, but were not allowed to play in the Indian Village without having children. Outrageous I say...

Ah, didn't understand you were being dropped off.

Yes, start at Super Morzine would be good place to start.

Later in the week it might be nice to go up from Prodains, go up the two chair lift (rather than the cable car), ski down to Grand Combes and then ski down the Arare blues.

The Indian Village is certainly fantastic - we had never been in there till we had our grand-daughter here learning to ski - third time now this Christmas and she flies round and loves it. There is a gentle poma in there with a lovely liftie who really helps the children - she is now quite happy on any of them anywhere else in the resort. Its just a very special area -

The old indian who we affectionately knew as 'Amigo' as that's pretty well all he said (was usually under the influence) but very friendly chap Laughing That was also a nice poma, we put our first turns in there (along with instructor and obligatory children)
