Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Geneva -> 3 Valleys transfer

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

We're booking a week in the 3 valleys (Les Menuires) but we've been told that due to the flight times, we can't get a transfer bus (it's the late Easyjet from Newcastle).

Does anyone know if there is another option at about 10.30pm other than a private taxi?

How much would a hire car cost? Is driving worth it or are the roads a bit sketchy?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

DoA, Taxi will be mega price, think I'd be getting into a cheap hotel near GVA railway station overnight and heading up on the train earliest train following morning to Moutiers or Aime, travel in ski gear and taxi from valley bottom (or hitch up?)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm renting car for about €240 but for four days only, worked out a lot cheaper than transfer which was about 170 each.

There might also be the option of picking it up in Geneva and dropping it off to one of the Three Valleys I think there might be a car hire place in one of them (Menuires?). In theory you could then rent it twice.

If you are renting, check the prices when renting on the 'French Side'. We used Argus Car Hire and ended up paying just over £100 for 5 days. The French side is part of the airport but technically France. 5 min walk from Arrivals and lots of info online on how to get to it

renting a car would be my option. make sure you book chains and practice putting them on.

Road to les menuires is quite easy

French side cheaper but according to welove2ski.com downsides include no winter tires as standard, no tax for Swiss roads which exposes you to fines and more difficult entry to the airport

the winter tyres issue is a real one (though if you have chains, and have practiced putting them on, that's not a disaster) but the other two points are a bit dopey. First, it's only the Swiss motorway vignette which you don't have, and you can buy one if you want to use the motorway - it's 40 francs. If you are on a really tight budget and have basic navigational skills it's easy enough to get in and out of the airport without using the motorway at all.

The way into the French side of the airport is slightly obscure but easy when you know how - and there are plenty of people who can tell you how.

You would need to be very careful, however, to ensure that your car hire firm know your flight number and guarantee to be still waiting for you with your car keys even if it's late!

I'd hire a car and get to the resort, get some sleep, then get up and ski. Otherwise you'll lose much of the next day faffing around.

No, the roads aren't "sketchy", they're fine. But if it's really snowy, of course, then all bets are off. Roads up to resort might be closed at night, and even when open, aren't ploughed so often at night. Neighbours who arrived in our resort at 1.30 am in one of the big snowstorms before Christmas had to leave their car at the bottom of the hill and walk up with three kids and luggage. they had snow tyres and chains, but once the snow gets to a certain depth it's just impossible for an ordinary vehicle with low clearance to shove it out of the way. Minor roads won't be kept ploughed all night.

But that was exceptional weather - normally you'll be fine.
