Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wintertaugliche Bereifung

If it's compulsory in Austria to put winter tyres on from November to March, why do car hire companies charge extra for them? Do they charge extra in summer for ordinary tyres?

RachelQ, Is that a hire within Austria? Very surprised about that. If you hire a car in Germany they get away with it as it's not the law in that country. Effectively an Austrian registered car would already has winter tyres on to be road legal.

Just a thought. If you are hiring IN Austria, just don't select the winter tyre option as the car will already be winterised to be legal to be available for hire.

RachelQ, Hire from Salzburg, even if you are landing in Munich. The car hire companies in Germany do not have to put winter tyres on because there is no law forcing them to do so. In Austria they also have no law forcing you to use winter/snow tyres, but they do have the obligation to use "wintertaugliche Beriefung" which means the car hire companies have to provide tyres suitable for winter conditions in Austria.

Catch the S-Bahn from Munich Airport to the Ostbahnhof in Munich, then catch a train to Salzburg and get the care hire to deliver your car to the Hauptbahnhof in Salzburg and you are off! You may still need to book snow chains as they are only obligatory if you are going to mountain areas. Today most cars needed chains to get up to Zauchensee or Obertauern. I've just walked back to Haus Susanne from Radstadt centre and all the roads are covered with compacted snow and more is falling. If you do not have good winter tyres, you would be going nowhere fast. Toofy Grin

eng_ch, my thoughts exactly!
gilleski, there wasn't an option to choose, but since we were hiring in Ausria, I assumed the car would come fully equipped. We paid the extra for snow chains, although we didn't need to use them.
Samerberg Sue, we flew into Salzurg so that's were we hired from with Sixt. And retrospectively got charged 2.50 Euros per day for winter tyres.
I just think it's a bit naughty to charge extra for 'winterisation of vehicle' during the months that it's mandatory anyway.

RachelQ, it's only mandatory if the conditions require it (new can of worms) - you might think that should be enough to say they shouldn't charge, but what if conditions did not require the winter tyres? I agree with you on the principle
