Does anybody have any opinions on de-tuning front and rear edges - good thing or bad thing?

There have been numerous threads about this in the past. Some say it's good, some say it's bad, but the basic consensus is that it matters little either way.

Phatairs,
It used to be done to avoid catching edges on 2m lenght skis, ungainly planks by comparison It isn't done now because skis are so much shorter and skied more on edge. Old school might do it out of habit more than effect IMO

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Phatairs, if you stick detuning with or without a hyphen into the search engine in the drop down menu in user facilities you'll get 23 hits - mostly relevant.

Phatairs, current thinking says you don't need to detune modern skis. I now tune my own, don't detune and have never had a problem.
On the other hand, if you want to detune then do - you have nothing to loose but your grip.

Phatairs, I think it depends partly on whether you ski mostly on- or off-piste. I was with a guide last year on an off-piste/touring week who had his B2s serviced part way through the week, and got quite irritated that the shop left the tips and tails sharp - couldn't understand why they woulld even think of doing that. A minute or so with his stone (halfway down some lumpy slope) and all was well again.

GrahamN, off-piste makes even less sense to me.

Off-piste the snow will generally be software and lumpier than on-piste; you are rarely going to need the edge to get the kind of grip you want to make a sharp carved turn on piste, and the sharper tips mean you're more likely to catch tip edges on the lumps you come across and be flipped around rather than power through them. I believe that's the reasoning.

Mmmm, food for though, I've been skiing for years and only came across detuning last year! Think I'll keep em sharp and keep going quick. Ski-ing on Volkl Six Star so a shame to loose any grip.
