I know this may be a daft question, but on reading CEM's answer to an earlier post about a boot causing a blister and CEM stating to make sure the second ankle clip is really tight to stop movement, i was wondering,
Which order should you do your boot clips up in, and which is it more important to have looser of tighter, or is it just a case of bung em on and do up to suit comfort.

okay, now clearly there was an element of fun with that response, however i am sure he and other in the foot game know what they are talking about. Would be interesting to here other pro responses, either racers or fitters.

I don't think it really matters, but I do them all a couple of notches less than tight first.

some people think it really matters. But then they have different views of the right order.
I don't care about the order, but in terms of the most important clip I always feel it's the second one from the top / the third one from the front of the boot (on 4-buckle boots). I often ski with the two bottom buckles open to avoid foot cramping, especially early in the day.

I was told middle ones first, then bottom then top? Interested to hear an experts view though!

I saw an American video on you tube, which stated do the ones over the top of the foot first to pull the foot into the boot and the heel back, then do the ones round the ankle and calf last, thats how i do it at the moment, dunno if its right.
In fact is there a right or a wrong way!!!!

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't even clip my boots up initially. I get the booster strap done up first then clip my boots, toes-calf. Once I've got off the first chair, I adjust them all again.

...my opinion and the advice I give people is...
(bottom buckle on a four buckle boot is number 1 (nearest the toes))
So the order would be:
3,4,2 (1 is totally unimportant).
The powerstrap could count as a 'buckle' too so in that case it would be 3, 4, 2, '5', 1
As the day wears on re-tignten the boots up as the foot settles in them!
For what its worth I hardly ever do my boots up (and of the straps) when I am teaching... spending about 250+ days a year in them I spend the majority of the time with them undone... only if I have solid skiers do I do them up - does wonders for your balance I can tell you. Sometimes after a week or two without doing them up it is a bit of a shock to the foot when I have to do them up but you certainly get a lot more response from the boot / ski when you do!

Steve Angus, that's the order I was told by CEM. It's important for me in v tight fitting boots to do it that way, and also to do that first ankle one with ankle and knee flexed to pull the foot right back. Or my toes hurt.

You know it makes sense.

Steve Angus, having just bought new boots, I was reminded of this by the boot fitter. It's also worth pointing out that once you've done up buckles 3 and 4, flexing the ankle will effectively push it backwards into the correct place and free up space around your toes.

As Steve Angus, says!
Might be the only one that does this but on some occasions in bumpy terrain I'll reduce the tension a little on clip #3 to gain a little more flex, but I'll leave the top clip and power strap intact, it gives me the feeling of secure control but with a little more range of movement when needed, some people may do the opposite and loosen the top clips/power strap but I feel you lose more control from the boot that way.
I wouldn't suggest trying any of this if you have naturally sloppy boots to start with!

based on the buckles being 1234 from the toe as described
3 first and then 4, 3 should be really snug to pull you back in the boot, then a few flexes to make sure that the foot is located right at the back where it should be, 1 then done up enough to stop the water (or at least some of it) coming in, then 2 snugly over the foot not too tight
clip 3 can be tightened until it hurts then backed off a little till very tight but not sore

I think I do my boots up as just described, but what I do notice is that I mustn't do number 2 up too tightly or it makes my foot hurt! Ouch!

I can't actually get 3 to catch unless I've done 1 and 2 first. So, I do 1, 2, 3, 4, as loosely as possible, then the booster strap as tightly as possible (which isn't very tight, I haven't got strong hands) then, having undone 1 and 2 again, I tighten 3 as much as possible without hurting, flexing the foot as CEM describes, then 4 fairly tight, then 1 and 2 just to catch, as loose as possible. In the past I have lost all sensation in the top of my foot, for several months, after over-tightening 2.
Well, that was really interesting, wasn't it? Not.
