Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski/Board outfit and equipment shopping in Sapporo

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Can anyone make some recommendations here? We'll be skiing Niseko in late Feb and would like to update some of our outfits and kit in Sapporo before heading to the mountain. We're staying in the Susukino district so somewhere convenient to there would be great.

Cheers,

A few general sports stores in Susukino which at this time of year will be well stocked with ski kit. Mostly general mass market slightly cheaper without too many brand names. Around south 3 west 3 (南3西3) that's 3 blocks south of Odori park and 1 block east of ekimaedori (the main road down from Sapporo JR.

For a wider selection of more technical kit and an all round awesome shop, head north of the Sapporo JR. One block north of Kita 12 subway station (北12) there is a store called shugakuso. It has a big sign outside saying 'outdoor store'. You can walk, or get the subway, it's maybe 3 or 4 stops north of Susukino.

There are also a load of outlet stores at the Sapporo Factory shopping arcade (nb not the Sapporo Brewery) at around north 1 east 4 (北1東4)

Further out there is another great shop called Paddle Club at Shinsapporo, tons of kit, and virtually impossible to get away wallet intact. You can get a train to Shinsapporo, it's a couple of stops from Sapporo JR. The shop itself is on Route 12, just where it crosses under the Expressway.

Thanks MagSeven, that's exactly the kind of info and detail I'm after!

While we're at it, would you have any recommendations for bars as well? Basically, on the one night we're spending in Sapporo, we plan to have Japanese BBQ at the Sapporo Brewery and would like to finish the night off at a bar if we're not too langered already.

Somewhere that we can get away with only English/Chinese language, is gaijin friendly, and within easy walk/stumbling distance of Susukino and he Mercure would be perfect.

There are tons of places in Susukino, most I don't know the names of!! Its fun just wandering and picking somewhere at random! (but be careful of excessive cover charges!)

The obvious Gaijin bar is Rad Brothers, on ekimae dori.

A place I have been to recently which is really fun, has cheapish drinks, no cover charge and a nomihoudai (all you can drink) is at South 3 West 2, on the top floor of the 'Frontier Sapporo Building' (フロンテイア札幌ビル). Big windows all round giving a great view, there are nice staff and a pool table, laid back atmosphere etc. They also do decent food if you can squeeze anything else in after the Gingiskan!

Tops advice again...

Thanks to Google maps I've managed to work out where Paddle Club is:
http://maps.google.com.hk/maps?q=Shin+Sapporo&hl=en&ll=43.028228%2c141.448503&spn=0.000004%2c0.002798&fb=1&gl=hk&hq=Shin&hnear=Sapporo%2c+Hokkaido+Prefecture%2c+Japan&safe=on&t=m&z=19&vpsrc=6&brcurrent=3%2c0x0:0x0%2c0&layer=c&cbll=43.028212%2c141.447705&panoid=JwbL6HeihMotXYwKX_7n9w&cbp=12%2c230.82%2c%2c2%2c-1.69

It seems that it's even closer to Oyachi Subway station than it is to the Shinsapporo railway station, albeit with far more stops from the CBD. Would it be quicker and easier to take the subway?

Cheers,
OS
