Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chambery transfer ideas???

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey guys, can anyone recommend a transfer company or suggestions on transfers from chambery airport to val thorens next week for four? We're looking at booking a chalet we've found but want to make sure we have transfers sorted. Found coolbus but looking at £135 each which I think is a little steep to say the least! Thanks in advance! David. snowHead

Hire a car - it's probably cheaper.

davy-boy, that's about the going rate for a transfer, I'd say. A hired car might well be cheaper but make sure you get chains and know how to use them.

not cheap, but we always use 3 valleys transfers, www.3vt.co.uk Always on time always professional. In fact booked to pick us up when we arrive at chambery a week on Sunday.

agree with altis, a hire car would probably work out cheaper, even after hire, insurance, petrol, parking and extras. The benefit you gt with a hire car is you are in control, the downside is you have to be in control.

Excellent advice Thankyou folks - do most cars come with chains supplied - id imagine so but it could be an extra - I'm just looking around at hire now.

davy-boy, at Chambery you would probably need to specify that you want chains, and then check they're the right size. Sounds daft, but somebody reported having been given the wrong size, recently. When exactly are you travelling - looks like there'll be quite a lot of weather about.

davy-boy: lots of snowHead use the following link, which gives 15% off usual Holiday Autos car hire rates:

http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/cgi-bin/liveweb.sh/QSearch.w?ctryref=GBR&lang=EN&aff=xOneAccount

And book before the end of December using discount code UKTREAT11 for a further 10% off the discount price Smile .

NB: They will charge extra for chains and snow tyres - but these are usually offered as a bookable extra. If you've never fitted chains, it's worth studying a 'How to fit snow chains' video on Youtube. Most are fitted in the same way. It may even be a good idea to video the how to fit guide on your mobile phone - for reference purposes if you need to fit them on a dark, snowy road. Don't know your flight times but a torch may be a useful bit of kit. A plastic bag to kneel on and an old pair of gloves are also definitely worth packing wink .

And finally, we always hire in Geneva, so not sure if you will need to know this...a fluorescent jacket is needed by law for all passengers when travelling on French motorways -ie in case of breakdown. French car hire firms may supply them Puzzled . Swiss ones don't so we take our own.

..only book a chalet that will offer a transfer as part of the deal. Try Chalets Direct Winter Solutions room.

More great advice - what did I expect?! wink I had tried holiday autos after reading, comes to around £200 for 4 days hire, with chains and ski rack - much better than the transfer price and I'd rather drive than be driven any day! We're looking at going away tomorrow actually - nothing like last minute but yes, I've seen there will be some weather in tignes this coming week! Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it! Very Happy

davy-boy, Probably too late for you but for others reading, I've often used travelsupermarket.com to compare but be careful as when you click through sometimes things are not always what they look like but I do find prices to be good and never had a problem.

Hello all, new to the forum after a short spell of lurking! Found this thread which seems like a good place to ask my question.

I'm heading over to Meribel for the first time in early Feb. Its looking like hiring a car is the cheapest option and I have clicked through the holiday autos link posted above. When it comes to adding the snow chains in 'extras' it mentions the chains are 35 euros each per rental. Is this 35 euro per snow chain or for a set?

Apologies in advance for my most probably rather dim question

davy-boy, That will be the cost with any other transfer company - remember its about a 6 hour round trip for them, you could try snowatartransfers.co.uk for another quote. As a slightly off the wall idea get the train from Chambery to Moutiers - then bus or taxy up the hill

mountainaddict, I got really badly burned with a booking through holiday autos last year and so I will never ever book through one of those price comparison/broker website. To cut a long story short we booked an estate to accomodate 4 people plus one board bag and luggage, and we ended up having the rental arranged with some fly by night cowboy operation which didn't have an office in the airport but did it's business from broken down van abandoned in the long stay car park. They had "upgraded" us to a small saloon car. By the time the mistake was identified there were no other suitable vehicles with anyone and Holiday autos were no use sorting it out. In the end we had people sitting on suitcases with board bag over heads in the car. To cap it all holiday autos said they'd refund 20% of the booking then denied it when we got back to the UK.

My top tip now is to book direct with one of the mainstream car hire companies and go through a cashback website - some of them give up to 10% back which makes the cost much more palatable.

Sorry, just realised this is a bit of a hijack. Back on topic, I would hire a car. It'll probably be cheaper.

+1 3VTransfers certainly to Meribel. I don't think there is a huge amount of difference in cost when you have four travelling, but it is very nice when you arrive and leave that someone else is taking the strain, it is also reasonable to assume that they will be in-tune with the required driving tome for the conditions. Having said that, I am picking up a hire car from Chambery next week!

Get the train to Moutiers and the bus from there. However, you will need a taxi to Chamery station and make sure you book one in advance for the return.
