Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Gear near Leeds ?

First off a merry christmas to all, hope you're enjoying it !

I'm currently on holiday in the UK, specifically near Leeds, and I'm on the lookout for some equipment for the coming weeks away.
I'd like to hit up some shops and when I ask the friends we're staying with they say we should go to Ellis Brigham. I'm looking for a new jacket and boots and I'm wondering if this is the best place or if there are better shops when it comes to ski gear.
We have a car so we can certainly get around.
I'm not particularly price conscious although I am of course on a budget. What I'm really interested in is getting kickass advice so I know I'm walking away with the right stuff, but of course I am going to do price comparisons with specialty ski shops at home.

If you have any suggestions where to go look for this I'd appreciate it, otherwise I guess I will go to EB and have a peak.

Thanks !

I'd say try the shop at a the Castleford Xscape or if you can get over the Pennines Rivlington Alpine near Wigan.

If you can get out to Otley I'd sure go to Glide and Slide.
Google for their website, it could be

Well worth a visit for great support and top gear at less than top prices. Very Happy

Speaking as a resident of Armley, I have to ask exactly where it is you come from that Leeds would be a 'holiday'? Mogadishu? Joking aside, if you're after wet weather kit, TK MAXX on the Headrow is superb and dirt cheap, also Blacks in the Queen's arcade is going under, and I got a pair of Nordica socks in there for £3 the other day. If it's actual equipment you're after then head towards Otley as above, or obviously; the fridge at Cas if you want a blast.

If you're after ski boots make an appointment at backcountryuk in ilkley. Excellent boot fitting service.

If you are out and about and your travels take you near the lakes you could try Anything Technical http://www.skiequipmentuk.co.uk/ +1 for Rivington Alpine. I've tried a couple of the others with mixed results depending on what I was going in for.

Has anyone tried severn sports, seem to be affordable rather than specialist.

Oh - also Ultimate Outdoors is in Skipton (Berghaus, Rab and Haglofs clothing), plus several other places in town of the "outlet" variety. Skipton's a nice day out anyway, if you like pork pies or chips.

Cynic, it's for skiing.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far. I will see which ones I can get around to and see if they can offer anything interesting.

And LukeRibs, we're here primarily because we're visiting friends Smile

Severn Sports in Crossgates has a strong range of both ski hardware and clothing. They also off-load on Ebay their left-overs from previous seasons. Well worth a visit, and prolly most nearest to Leeds.

However, I still suggest Glide and Slide in Otley, Steve Hankin the owner is a long experienced BASI qualified skier, he sources great kit at good prices and really has a handle on what's quality kit rather than what's just commercial rubbish. He also is the UK agent for Strolz ski boots, so if Santa has got the readies treat yourself to a great pair of boots. Glide and Slide ................... well worth the trip.

And Andy is right, Skipton is worth a visit, the pies are good, sadly the market is frequented by octegenarian trippers in shell suits from across the border in Lancashire. Pubs outside Skipton to visit ............... The Angel at Hetton. Madeye-Smiley

Severn Sports in Armley has been closed for three years or so, they do still operate their other store in Crossgates, Leeds but I haven't been for a couple of years so couldn't comment on their stock holding. I prefer BAC outdoors in Elland now as I find the owner more approachable. Have been to the Otley store mentioned and that is worth the drive from Leeds also. Laughing

Used Severn Sports many times over the last couple of years and have had great service, cheapest prices (and trust me I shop around!) and great range of stock. Thumbs up from me.

Just wanted to thank you guys for all your suggestions.
We ended up going to xscape and headed for Ellis Brigham, however that was quite the disappointment.
I did find out though that there were other shops there and found a jacket to go with everything else I got in Surfanic. Besides the very suspicious low price (£100) for the jacket it seemed like the quality was ok, but I will find out in a few weeks when I'm away and it's cheap enough not to be sad if it doesn't work.

As for ski boots I found that, at least at EB, the price is pretty much around the same as back home, despite the favorable (to me) exchange rate.

I also wanted to lay my hands on a new Drift HD camera, but it sure seems like stores don't like anything but the GoPro brand. A bit disappointing.

All in all the selection could have been better, but at least I got my priority, a jacket, covered.

Thanks again for all the advice, I'm sure I will be back for more later !

Another plug for Glide and Slide!! Toofy Grin

Before you leave Leeds I really do suggest a trip out to Otley. Glide and Slide is well worth the visit, and if you find it's not got what you want the town of Otley has thousands of pubs!!!!! Cool
