Ski Data, the Salzburg-based inventors of 'contactless' ski passes, is converting all ticket barriers across the Trois Vallees ski area - 200 lifts serving what is claimed to the world's largest skiable area.
The company reports:
Quote: |
... the new shared access control system will be up and running from November 2005, when the majority of ski lifts will be equipped with networked contactless readers. Currently the region’s operators are using different ticketing systems. In a second project phase starting in the summer of 2006, the equipment at Les Trois Vallées will be successively upgraded to a common and centralized ticketing system. |
Full details from Ski Data's news release.
Ski Data has been one of skiing's most innovative and successful companies, since its system has found favour with a substantial number of ski resorts internationally. Its systems are also used in amusement parks, stadiums and car parks.
Val d'Isere is also converting to a Ski Data system over the next two years.

They were tweaking the machines at the croisette in 1850 when I was there on tuesday. Also replacing the emergency cable on the pyramides teleski. Still a fair bit of work to do I'd guess on the detachable 6-man chair replacing the old signal and bel air teleskis; bits of lift carefully laid out all over the mountainside and enormous lorries grinding their way up there with identifiable lift bits on board (most of the pylons are up though).

Poma where is the new chair going from - is it taking the line of the old signal drag or the one that runs from the bottom of the drag to the top of the belair gondola?

We've heard the very long Signal and Bel Air drag lifts over at 1650 are being replaced by a high speed 6 seater detachable chair - these are the lifts right at the far side of the whole ski area bordering the entrance to Vallee Des Avals with the red Chapelets and Bel Air runs down them. There are also much needed new cabins going on the gondolas from 1550 and Le Praz. |
Hope the above helps.

About time! Being one of the premier resorts they should have done this a long time ago. It is crazy when the likes of Livigno (no offence) has implemented this many years ago. I know they have more lifts in the 3V area but they also have a far bigger revenue. The PDS has had it for a numer of years also. Other than the rant, I love the 3V area.

lots of French resorts have hands free systems.
Anyway - damn that's another area I will have to pay to ski!

poma, they've had a hands-free system in Serre Chevalier for years.

Is there only one hands free system in use across Europe?
If so does this mean i can just get the card I used in the PDS charged up when I visit the three valleys so i save myself the 2Euros extra they like to charge for a "hard card" rather than the paper one?

Helen Beaumont, I remember having to slide under one of the barriers at a chairlift there, cause the machine refused to work. Got some dirty looks off the lift operator

You know it makes sense.

mark_s, my season pass at Les Arcs last year was very temperamental. It eventually gave up triggering the turnstyles so I replaced with a new card. The new card fortunately worked as it should. I love the hands-free system; no more unzipping pockets to search for a photopass

It's not just more convenient for the sliders but it also gives data on useage of the lifts so they can better plan maintenance and when to remove / upgrade lifts.

Only real pain with these systems are when you're skiing with kids! My 4 year old twins aren't tall enough to trigger the system so I had to lift them up to the scanner each time - good arm exercise.
Otherwise they are great - particularly as it avoids the daily problem of one of our group forgetting their pass each day as they've hung it on a chair etc.

rob@rar.org.uk, I think this was the turnstyle itself. Just there was no way I was going to try and sidestep into the other queue, or worse, goto the back of it
One of the machines at Crest Voland once tore my pass right off the holder. It decided to pull it back in as I was sliding forward.
