Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing when pregnant

Hiya - Just wanted some information (not negative crap please).

My husband, daughter and I are off to St Anton for Christmas and I am 17 weeks pregnant, therefore in the hope of having a light ski (just down blues and greens). I have brought a pair of salopettes a size to big too fit my very small bump in.

Has anyone else skied or know of people that have skied whilst pregnant and if so how did they feel?

I plan on keeping myself hydrated and only going out for an hour or so a day, to keep my heart and lungs healthy!

No - I will continue with my Ski. Doctor has given me the all clear to ski - including my insurance. I am hear to ask how others felt as in sick, tired, needing to wee every 5 mins.

tam80, I remember a school trip back in the early 80s with one of my teachers who was quite heavily pregnant. She wore her husbands ski gear and couldn't fasten the salopettes! She also skied like a demon all week! If you're anything like her you will have no problems at all. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy a couple of months later who we all called 'Morris Minor' (she was Mrs Morris).

My friend skied when she was 12 weeks pregnant last time we went to Soll. She had the go ahead from her doctor and she took it easy on the green/blue slopes and she was fine. She was a bit tired in the evenings but other than that she had a great holiday.

tam80, My wife was 12 weeks when we went to Jackson Hole, she took it easy, only skiing fot a few hours a day and kept hydrated as well as lots of food to keep up the energy, she was fine, in fact the only thing that made her feel under the weather was the long travelling time on flights.

Go and enjoy.

Yep, more of the same, my missus skied with both of ours on-board. She did turn out a bit more susceptable to altitude the second time out at Courchevel, but her blood pressure was playing some tricks on her, and after a half-hour sit down she was fine. Take it a bit easier, mind how you go and have a hot chocolate break now and again. Tbh Junior will probably get a kick out of it form all that tasty adrenalin and endorphins running through your system.

tam80, my daughter's first skiing experience was from within the womb - 10-12 wks-ish IIRC. Her mum was fine, apart from sulking at the non-apres participation!

Chloe is looking forward to her second week skiing under her own steam in Jan and seems none the worse for her early slope time...!

Unless that is, unprovoked bouts of petulance and foot stamping disobedience are her parents' punishment for continuing to holiday in the mountains while she was still cooking...?? Puzzled

tam80, you will be in the middle trimester which is the safest bit of the pregnancy, - but still probably not a good idea to fall heavily directly onto your tummy. Having said that, you are also riding, which statistics say is much more dangerous rolling eyes

My nephew's wife Queen of the Slopes is also mid-trimester and due to go out to St Foy at the end of the week - but is planning to not ski (although unlike you she has only skied for 1 week before). Having seen the conditions there, I was thinking of donning a blond wig, losing a few stone and replacing her (hopefully my nephew wouldn't notice Laughing ).

I cannot imagine going to a ski resort in winter and being able to resist the pull of the slopes. Have a great time.

Go for it, no bother.
My missus skied with both our kids no problem. I was a bit nervous when she set off down the ridge to the Grand couloir in Courchevel with one on board, but that was mainly due to the fact that I was a pisch skier then and was finding it tricky. I just went round the side and met "them" at the bottom. She was fine. The second time round she did have to lay off the off piste as she fell over once, but on the pistes was fine.
To be honest it's the year after you need to worry about. much more trouble when they're out.

tam80, I am reading this with great interest. My daughter is coming skiing with me in Jan and will be 15 weeks. I am more concerned about the long flight from Canada, but she has decided not to ski. It was booked before she knew she was pregnant. She is intending to do some nordic skiing and snowshoeing.

Her mum skied when she was 7 weeks pregnant with her, and had twins!

My friend has done everything including running, totally crazy bodypump classes, climbing to Kebnekaise etc. and felt absolutely fine. No skiing though, since the season only started a month ago (about the time she stopped going to body pump) and she's due in the beginning of January.

Last year mywife was circa 20 weeks when we were away - (likewise we'd booked before we knew she was pregnant).

She took her ski stuff intending on doing a few hours each day taking it easy on greens and easy blues etc. She was a bit cautious first run, but quickly fell into the swing of things and skied the whole week as normal. To be fair she was perhaps a little more cuatious with speed and perhaps avoided blacks and steeper reds, but otherwise skied a normal week.

To be fair she's not a risky skier anyway and doesn't really let rip at high speed, so she rarely falls. Our bigger fear was an out of control loon taking her out, which thankfully never happenened - we were away mid Jan so it was pretty quiet.

I would say its down to your perception on life/risk and how confident you are, as well as how positive you are about getting on with stuff or conversly whether you'd be happy sitting around missing out. It also depends on how active & fit you are and how well you feel with the pregnancy at the time, It's very individual. Of course, there is always a risk that you fall, or someone hits you - you have to weigh it up and make the choice.

Her skiing worked for her/us. Likewise we had friends the following who skipped skiing altogether whilst pregnant and was happy in the chalet relaxing every day.

I fell over a lot more doing that than doing downhill; unless you are somewhere with just flat boring valley bottom tracks, it's harder than it looks. Great fun, though.

I don't remember a lot of negativity from previous threads about this. But everybody is different, and feelings in pregnancy can be heightened. And some people suffer far more than others. I had no problems other than the usual sickness in the first trimester, which wasn't extreme. I had no opportunity to ski, but did windsurf right through to 2 weeks before delivery with my third.

But my daughter, now on her second pregnancy, has big problems. Severe sickness all the way through - she can't function at all without anti-emetics, but they lower her already low blood pressure to the level where she's liable to feel very faint - not nice when you're out with a toddler, or driving. She also has pelvic instability problems, being helped with specialist physio.

She's normally an active girl - cycles, swims, windsurfs and surfs. But apart from the swimming she can't do any of that now and although she's a keen - and good - skier she wouldn't ski. Not because of fear of damage to the foetus but because of fear of damage to herself, especially if she fell in a way which strained her pelvis.

A competent skier is no more likely to fall on gentle pistes than on icy resort pavements. Yes, an out of control skier could knock you over, but an out of control driver could bump into you too.

I'm not a horsey person - only ever done a bit of the sort of pony trekking where the pony knows where to go. But I'd be scared of riding when pregnant. Depends what you're used to, I suppose. I think most pregnant women have a pretty good idea of what they want to do, and not do. And woe betide anyone who tries to argue with them!

I don't think it's a great idea to be honest. I'm sure the odds are massively in your favour that all will be well but it's still a risk I probably wouldn't take. (not that i'd ever have to make the decision since i have a Y chromosome)

I skied whilst pregnant with both of my children, and took it very easy rested slot, I was about 18 weeks first time and 12 and 22 weeks with my second. I felt quite unwell and was still having morning sickness so it wasn't great but I am glad I tried it

I would take each day at a time and chill out if you want to have an afternoon nap

I think it depends on how much you value a week of skiing compaired with the chance of losing an unborn child.

The main concern is collisions I think. Mrs Jbob managed to bust her shoulder nordic skiing last season! I think it will be fairly flat stuff.

Go for it tam80,

I skied (cautiously) at Easter when I was in the early and my most tired stage of pregnancy. I really enjoyed my holiday but did have a couple of hours sleep instead of participating in après!

The newest addition to our ski crew was born on 18th Nov 2011. He is about to experience his first mountain holiday from 24th Dec!!

Very Happy

Because your statement is of the form:

"I think it depends on how much you value ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING compared with the chance of losing an unborn child"

You can replace that with literally anything. Riding a bike, crossing the road, eating unpasteurised cheese.

It's false dichotomy-invoking, reactionary, hysterical, silly, nonsense. It implies that the skiing mother-to-be values a week's skiing over and above the life of her child. Which is preposterous.
