It’s still pretty stormy. Only the gondola and 1 lift (Oberjoch) open at First. In Wengen the Männlichen cable car opened late, but most lifts are running. At Mürren the only open lifts are Winteregg and Maulerhubel. Better weather is forecast for tomorrow, but today’s snow is a handy top-up for Easter.

I popped down from Basel for a quick day trip today. Excellent snow conditions on the pistes, and the weather was lovely too. Cloud starting descending at about 3pm but my legs had had enough by then anyway

Yes when I was in Wengen last week we noticed that quite a few hotels were closed; certainly the Bernerhof, Sunstar, Silberhorn and the Bären. Our hotel the Edelweiss only had a few guests towards the end of the week but the owner Daniel told me that the following week (i.e this week) they are full with a group booking for Easter.

Much warmer today. Nursery slope is beginning to look a bit threadbare, but the village run is still open all the way back to the Männlichenbahn.
Kleine Scheidegg ski area open until 24/4 and Eiger Nord Wang chair lift until 1st May, temperature should cool off a little to make some good late season skiing

Another bargain of the century in the Jungfrau region. James Bond brunch today at Piz Gloria at the summit of the Schilthorn. Unlimited hot and cold buffet, coffee and as much Prosecco as you can drink, CHF25. Crazy. And look at that view!

@telford_mike, yes I saw that they were doing a special offer for the brunch of CHF25 if you've got a lift pass. You said "As much Prosecco as you can drink" - did you ski down the black run from the Schilthorn afterwards or download in the cable car?

@Alastair Pink, Haha, if only. You can just see Val's knee brace in the picture - 2 knee fractures, torn ACL and a broken ankle so no skiing at the moment. But getting to Piz Gloria on crutches is definitely possible! Are you coming for Telemark Only next month?

Occupational hazard for ski teachers. Stopped in an awkward, narrow spot to help a child who'd had a crash, and had to take evasive action to avoid being hit by an impatient skier who didn’t want to wait 30 seconds for the child to get to his feet. It happens. She'll be fine for next season - the healthcare here is outstanding.

Could i share my wife's story re her accident on March 1st.
Mrs R is an excellent skier having skied 30 plus seasons and skis just about anything on piste.
We had a great morning with DHO and a light lunch before we peeled off to head down for a swim.
On the race track 200m above the jump she was slowing to me and took a awkward side fall with skis staying on.
Managed to get her released and to the side before looking at the knee. TBH i didn't like what i saw and the next bit being tough i called for SOS.
Ewan a Scottish chap rocked up and was mega. We decided against the heli and put her leg in a splint and she rode the skidoo side saddle.
After assessment at the doctors they were not happy so it was on a drip and train to Lauter then Ambulance to Interlaken.
Tibula plateau fracture requiring pins and plates and screws as well as a bone graft. This was done the following day and she remained in there for 6 days.
Visiting was limited to 1 person and 45m so i got into late afternoon trips jumping off and taking the 150 bus to Spittal.
The team at the Sunstar were outstanding even visiting her in hospital with flowers thank you Katja.
The care was excellent and we got her back to Wengen for another week ( i had moved from the Sunstar by then ) to an apartment in the village.
Special thanks to Vivian and Emma next door who popped in to check on her and have a cup of tea on a regular basis.
We managed to get her about in a wheelchair as her leg was in a full brace so it could not be bent.
Jet 2 refused to let her fly ( small print you have to be able to bend your knee) so i let the insurance co sort it and back to Manchester we went.
We had to have cars both to and from the airport for her. the train was not possible.
So today we are just starting to weight bear and the knee specialist we chose in the UK is delighted at the work done in Switzerland.
We hope she will ski again but we will face that next season.
What did i learn.
Insurance well it goes without saying a must.
The European health card also picked up a fair chunk of costs.
Overall close to swiss 80,000 of which the majority was the hospital at 3500 swiss a night you can see why.
AIG paid us back within 4 weeks the bits that we had paid out circa 3000 and i just have the discussion to finish with JET2.
Why she could not of had 3 seats like Easy jet did i dont know but it was annoying especially as i am a shareholder.
Should anyone get this injury or need advice she is now a bit of an expert so please message me.
Our daughter was part of the AICC races and secured a silver which certainly cheered my wife up.
Wengen our second home for almost 30 years will remain our winter bolt hole.

@castleford tiger, sorry to hear that, I hope Mrs CT continues to make progress. Val's accident happened while she was working, so all the costs are picked up by the ski school who employ her (who are obviously covered by insurance). We'll never know what the total cost was, as the healthcare providers bill the insurers directly. We have physio twice a week and a weekly appointment with our family doctor, and in a few weeks time we're back off to the hospital at Interlaken, which will doubtless involve another MRI.
As you say, the healthcare here is insanely good, but it comes at great cost. Visitors - get travel insurance!

@telford_mike I hope you're wife is improving now and that she'll be able to resume her job next season OK. Do you guys have jobs out of the ski season? We'll be back in the area in August with our caravan. Don't normally go in holiday season due to cost, but our eldest son wants to show our grandchildren what he used to get up to when he went there every summer with us and his brother.
Hi @DixieDean, and thanks for the good thoughts. Mrs t_m improves every day, and she can now walk up to the village unassisted from our house, which is a huge plus. I'm sure she'll be fit and raring to go for next season. We don't have jobs during the summer, so no worries there. Guess you’ll be staying at Jungfrau Camping in Lauterbrunnen? Love the on-site restaurant - we often go for dinner.

Yes the menu is excellent, I've stayed several times with friends in an apartment in Lauterbrunnen and we usually try to have a couple of dinners there.
The last few days they've been holding the Telemark Only Event where Telemark skiers meet up and ski up at Birg and the Schilthorn (they operate the Riggli chairlift for us). Friday and Saturday were cloudy so visibility wasn't great, but the snow is in very good condition. Today it was a lot brighter so I went up the Schilthorn for some views then skied back down the black run to Birg. Here's a video I took of some of the other Telemarkers on the run.

@telford_mike, I would say 99% telemarkers, I did see a set of alpine skis on the ski racks at Birg, and I did see a snowboarder going into the snowpark.

Popped over to the little hamlet of Iseltwald on Lake Brienz today, and was surprised to find a queue of tourists for a little jetty in the harbour.
It turns our that this jetty features in the smash hit Korean drama 'Crash Landing On You'.
So now it’s selfie central. Nice cruise on the lake though. Temps about +27C, FL around 3700 metres (!).
