Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

helmet cams

Hopefully this is in the correct forum..

so i am thinking of buying a helmet cam or similar to record what i am up to...going to stamboat on 23/12 for 2 weeks and seems wrong that i would only have any recordings from the video reorder on my camera..

I am looking for some advice on what cam to buy..goes without saying i dont want to spend a lot of money but equally i dont want to spend on something that is not up to the job.

any advice on what i should be lloking for, what to avoid etc etc would be appreciated..
thanks

pauljames, have a look in the Equipment Review / Questions section. Or have a search. There have been some great threads on helmet cams on the board...

There are some good deals on the old Go Pro HD now the new HD2 is out, I picked one up last week for half what it was about 2 months ago. Just check everyone's favourite book/cd/dvd/electronics shopping website.

If you look at comparisons on youtube I reckon you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the old one and new one if you just want to shoot video. Make sure you get yourself a nice big, fast SD card at the same time.

If you are going to the USA anyway - sort out an address 'over there' and get yourself one online in the USA - much cheaper than UK/Europe

I use a GoPro HD - the new HD Pro has higher resoluton but otherwise no big change

Only problem with the GoPro is the Box on the head look - Countour is a a better looking/more subtle machine but not as good functionality or image quality IMHO

pauljames, I have bought a Muvi HD Pro for this years ski trip. Got it for £120 off play.com (currently £160) Films 1080p and v good quality. Like the Go Pro, looks a bit out of place on a ski helmet, but for what I needed, was a great price. If I had seen the contour (mentioned above on amazon) may have got that one, but this comes with tons of mounting pieces, so can attach to helmet, goggles, skis, legs, arms etc all included in the price. Filmed a few trials with it and really good

I have a Drift HD170 Stealth - video quality is great - 1080p HD. It has a remote to start and stop recording, and has a built in LCD screen for lining up shots which is useful when it comes to actually using the thing. It also shoots good time lapse stuff. Similar price to the Contour, but to my eyes the video quality is better, and it has more useful features. These threads keep popping up and I keep pimping it, but I really love mine! Can be had on Amazon for £150.

Oh my, what a dilemma, the Go Pro/Contour debate! In the end even though my investigation probably led me to believe the Go Pro came out about 51/49 on image quality over the equivalent Contour, I'm afraid I simply couldn't resist the slimline look of the Contour (basically I couldn't stand the thought of looking like a giraffe! - I am also unconvinced that the 'stalk' mounting of a Go Pro wouln't fail in a head over crash)

Add to this the GPS functionality of the Contour GPS and the irresistable Bluetooth link to my HTC Android phone (nothing extra required) and I went for the GPS.

Happy to report after testing at last weeks PSB, I am very happy with my purchase.

The optimum set up is at 720 as you can set 60fps which apart from allowing slowmo replay is generally a better playback (using VLC)

I still have to add something to prevent the camera shake when mounted on the goggle strap (should be fairly simple) at greater speed and am happy to report the mic noise is not too bad - I left the protective tape over tha mic hole.

Anyway here is a very earlier test vid from last week, see what you think:)

I do intend doing some more tweaking on the Brightness Contrast as at the moment the settings are\out of the box.

Good luck

andyman, GoPros are virtually indestructible, they'd definitely survive a head over heel crash! Just comes down to personal preference at the end of the day really doesn't it. They all perform fairly similar.

I don't really know much about these but if it helps this is some footage from my son riding in a competition using one supplied by hedcamz.com
I can find out which one it is if that helps anyone.

well thanks to all that have input to this thread. still undeicded but i think i will have to place an order on one tomorrow so i can get my delivery in time for steamboat on 23/12 Toofy Grin

skitow, just looked at this website an di have to say i have done some research and would never buy from that site. internet purchases are to some extent a lucky dip unless you know what you are buying and that webiste has no product information so how can anyone make an informed purchase based on what their web site says..only way i would buy from them is if they are cheaper and even that is not the case
