@jafa, Just looked at the webcams, all a bit bizarre. Beautiful warm autumn Kaiserwetter with green hill sides but then a small area of snow which you can see on some of the wide angle images. Really not sure quite what this achieves beyond a small training area for the local ski clubs, the cost and effort seems out of all proportion with the benefits. I think I would stick with the golf whilst the weather lasts!

Im only venturing up tomorrow to do the ski/golf double on same day.
As we have annual ski passes, Im not having to buy a pass...............otherwise, yes, I wouldnt bother.
I suspect the golf course at Ellmau will close on Tuesday, as soon as the valley gets its first snow. Even though it will prob be gone again by mid morning.
I presume once again its Kitz looking to be the first non glacier resort to open for skiing, limited as it is.

So started snowing last night and woke up today to the ultimate winter scene with snow even down in the valley
Some of the upper snow cannons are working especially as I look out over Pengelstein from our balcony
Gaisberg and the Maierl not on but it’s roasting with the sun having been out since about ten o clock
Ideal opportunity for my wife to change the terrace from Autumn mode to winter putting on the fir tree branches and the red baubles

From looking at the webcams, it doesn’t seem like Kitzbuhel is getting much of that snow that is dropping over the western Alps. From the radar on the Outlook thread, it seemed like it was going to catch the edge of it. Not happening as yet though.

Its been snowing today down here at the village level, but ironically with today being warmer than recent times, its not lying. Though looking at the web cams up top it certainly looks like its getting there with the cannons working.
https://www.bergfex.com/kitzbuehel-kirchberg/wetter/prognose/
Its forcast for below temps up the mountain for the next nine days so fingers crossed

Saw skiers out on the runs above the Hahnenkamm today on the webcams. I wonder what damage the high temperatures will do next week. GFS shows 10C!

Kitz village got about 5 cm of snow this night and it’s still coming down in small quantities.
Yesterday was quite busy on the slopes, which were in nice condition.

Thanks for the report @jafa, keep ‘em coming! I’ve not skied in Kitzbuhel since New Year 2020, just before COVID kicked in so really looking forward to getting out in February. I am glued to webcams and weather forecasts at every available opportunity so ‘skis-on-the-snow’ reports are always gratefully received by me. Thanks again

So am I, I have had a full year with no skiing, I ruptured my knee last year, and that curtailed the short trips I would do after January. I can't wait to get back, we were in kitzbuhel last year but this year we will stay in brixen and do both areas. I hope my knee behaves itself. I check both the cameras and the weather reports all the time.

No probs
This year I’ve only got a Kitz ski area pass as wife has decided to ski again so should be up the mountain even more this year. First day skiing for her yesterday since 2015 and she was fine so fingers crossed for plenty of sunny days
It’s been grey and flat light here all day
But the forecast heavy snow has dwindled to just light snow all day tomorrow starting later this evening ( just as I have to go and get her from a Xmas party)
Will report on Monday what we actually get

Hey @jafa - just posted up a thread about our January trip to Kitz for five days of skiing, Jan 19-23. We fly Jan 24, so will miss the actual races, but will try to catch the training runs. Would be great to catch up for some runs if you’re up for it. Wife doesn’t d/h ski, only Nordic; and I’ve never been to Kitz before. I’ll ski pretty much anything on or off piste (within reason . Staying in an apartment in center of town near the Grandhotel Kitzbuehel.
Happy to hear there’s some good snow out there now. Hope it keeps on coming.

Nice report, @jafa - thanks. And good work rescuing the father/son duo. I can relate. Last year in Switz I was skiing solo toward end of a clouded day and the light was so flat that I literally couldn’t see where the run went next. I ended up dropping off the side of the traverse I was on down a short powder shot that I thought I recalled doing earlier in the day as I followed a small group down the same run. Turned out I was early, and the drop I took landed me in a giant bowl from which the only way out was up. Skis off and up-trudging it was for me. It seemed like an interminable distance but I persevered, looking up occasionally at a cable car passing overhead wondering if anyone noticed the forlorn soul a couple hundred feet below struggling to escape.
And then a winch cat groomer appeared over a ridge, dropping down at an angle to the fall line and winching himself out because the area he was grooming was so steep. Another 50 yards up a very steep pitch and I was within his sight line. I flagged him down and in broken German offered my lame-ass excuse as to why I was in this fix and would he be so kind as to give me a lift out - it was still a couple hundred yards in deep snow to go. He obliged and I was saved.
So I can understand how they got confused. The piste skiing there is really different from how it is here in the US. Something like that in our resorts would have been so well demarcated and roped off that dropping into it by mistake - even in a whiteout - would’ve not been possible. In any case, lesson learned.
So yes, please - I’ll ping you when we get there and see if we can maybe catch up - would be great. We arrive 18 Jan, skiing 19-23. Thanks!

Sounds v good.. May we ask how are conditions looking. We’re considering visiting for the week starting January 11 but have previously been (too…) hesitant due to concerns about altitude and snow reliability in January.

Snow making is extensive through the area
Certainly while I sit waiting for my porridge and venturing up the mountain the snow cannons are all working as it’s minus 12 today up the top
The whole area looks wintery after the snow we had on Thursday evening and even more cold conditions to come this week with further snow falls
Other than in Jan2007 due to lack of snow the DH has generally been fine for racing so go for it

After the Flek car park was rammed decided to just ski the Gaisberg today
Hard compact pistes with all the cannons working hard
Looking at the webcams good decision to avoid the main ski area
Will go back up on Monday as next week defo one of the best of the year quiet and good conditions

@paulmags, If there is decent snow in January (there is most years just the occasional one where snow doesnt arrive to mid January) it is the best time for Kitzbühel and the surrounding resorts, usually cold compressed powder pistes. As you can see from various comments and webcams currently decent conditions all rounds and the crowds will disappear after Monday.

With temperatures consistently dropping as low as minus ten overnight the pistes are really hard and compact .Even early pm no sign of moguls in the usual hotspots
Best conditions so far excellent skiing
Needless to say discussing only on piste
Skied fm Kirchberg all the way over to Resterhoe/Pass Thurn and back again
Have to say in the shade even early pm it was cold
Looks like it’s like this now until Friday so those coming out this week are in for a treat

oh good, we arrive on saturday night, so will be on the slopes first thing on sunday morning. From the forecast it looks like it's going to be a sunny week. Once there is snow I'll be happy, and there seems to be good snow. Skis are all bagged up and sitting in the hall, now to go rummage and get all the ski gear together for the four of us. ( Daughters will pack make up and forget base layers, so I make sure the gear is all packed.)

Temps have been consistently cold overnight here.
The pistes are hard and crisp.
Skiing back down the Maeirl back home at half three there were very little moguls. I commented to the group of Dutch friends that it was the fastest Ive ever skiied off the mountain at that time of day. A combination of temp and not that busy.
The outlook did forecast a dump on Tuesday, but thats currently disappeared off Bergfex. Fingers crossed it will materialise. But the cold overnight temps looks to be continuing, so the pistes are still giving fantastic skiing.
The downhill tomorrow looks like similar weather, so should be a good one, sun wise.
Will be venturing into Kitz after the race for a few beers.

All of yesterday seemed like a day of debauchery in Kitzbuhel! In a good sense. Would highly recommend going for a race weekend. It's something that has to be seen at some point in everyone's life. As a Canadian, I sure picked a good year for me to go!
