Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A snowHead
The curse of many skiers. Ice can be skied on, the racers do it all the time, but it is quite tricky. When first starting, try to avoid turning on the ice, instead use the snow at the side. Remember to keep your edges sharp, a stable stance, and your weight low and centred, and soon you'll be dealing with it without any problems.

Do not however try to ski on ice if it has a slight blue tinge and looks like thick molten glass, it has the same hardness as concrete and cannot be turned on, just let yourself go straight across it and turn later, usually found in dips in the piste where snow melts in hot sun then freezes at night
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

A BASI trainer showed me techniques for skiing - and, more to the point, turning - on ice that work brilliantly.
Spread your parallel skis much wider than normal, which increases your stability and balance enormously, and drop your upper body by flexing the legs more. This also makes things much more stable. Turn with the skis in this wide stance, maintaining good discipline of the upper body by keeping it semi-square to the fall-line and not rotating it too much.
You can do linked wide-stance parallel turns down sheet ice in this 'dropped' position and feel really secure.
