Sierra Nevada is doing well at the moment with between 20cm and 60cm in the Borreguiles and Veleta zones. The resort is planning to open on 26 November. Will this be a repeat of last year with SN beating the Pyrenees in terms of season snowfall?

freeheelskier, that was commonly known as far as I was aware; maybe I'm mistaken?
Certainly SN got some nice dumps whilst we in the Pyrenees were having a merely average season and putting up with that dire January. They had some pretty impressive snow depths during the season too. (By Pyrenees, though, I'm talking eastern/central. I can't comment on what things were like in the west.)

Look on the webcam, to ski SN before xmas seems to be the best resort in Europe with no glacier

Ricklovesthepowder, the forecast say for the next 9 days, rain at baselevel, snow from midlevel, not alot, a few cm but degrees below zero from 2500m, so its looks good for snowmaking on higher slopes

Sierra Nevada confirms the opening of their season for the 26 November. Also the additional of a halfpipe and more freestyle focused area.

I'll be boarding there on 28th Dec for 8 days so will drop an update here once I have sampled the snow. Last year the conditions were brilliant; apart from a few total white-outs that were *fun*.
Hoping this year will be just as good because I am out again in Feb till the season end and hoping not to be disappointed!

Looking forward to your updated. Always wondered about SN. It seems like a perfect location - sea and skiing all within reach at different times of year obviously.

My old man lives down by Malaga on a boat and I was thinking of heading over to Sierra Nevada for a few days when I go to see him at the beginning of March. Anyone know what it's like at that time of year?

Cheers freeheelskier. Will try to convince the rest of the family that midweek is best but they'll probably struggle to get the time off work.

OK, I was there last week. No snowfall for a few days but they have wicked snow making facilities. The sun means soft snow in the afternoon & early evening but ice hard "snow foam" first thing in the morning. Made the mistake of going right to the top of a red run at the top of the peak before I had checked for ice (it was 9am). It was a painful run down!
The main pistes are in an OK condition but lack of snow and continuous abnormal high temperatures mean that unless things get colder they will start getting through to the rock soon - in a few spots it was happening. Falls are pretty hard because the snow layer is packed and only a few inches thick. Late afternoon you get some 'powder-like' stuff where it has been softened up and it is OK.
Hopefully they get a drop in temp and some decent snow ASAP; it was expected 5th Jan but I haven't investigated further yet. I am sure that mid Jan it will start getting decent snow, it is the typical time of year.
I was there 29, 30, 31st Dec, 1st, 2nd Jan and never found it that busy, queues are sometimes big but move fast and you won't queue more than 2 - 3 minutes max, usually a lot less. Hit up the park and the snow-cross pistes and they are pretty reasonable busy - not crowded.

spitzy303, There has been no snowfall to talk about since beginning of december,, the real season start at beginning of february and then its real crowdy at weekends,, I have make season there, and still go there for alpine touring. the onpiste skiing in SN not interrested me,, but for the normal tourist skier its normaly great skiing up there,, for alpine touring its not only Veleta to ski, there is some other great peaks to climb and ski

I'm with you on that - can't wait for proper snow, then I'll take the lift up (season pass) and trek with the board along a few ridges to find fresh powder off-piste. Still though, the park at SN is pretty sweet... and when there is good snowfall, there are a lot of semi-off piste routes you can use...

I was there when it last snowed on the 17th Feb. The pistes were in great condition (it has been consistenly cold there) - off piste was rocky (even with the fresh snow), though good on the 17th I wouldnt bank on it now.
Couldn't find any moguls, but then couldnt find any ice/hardpack (except off piste) and the blacks funnelling into the home run were great to blast down. The blues and nursery greens were great for my kids - as said piste in really good condition throughout the day.
Least favorite runs were the west facing reds above the village - harder I think cause they get the afternoon sun. The Laguna reds were in great condition and empty - just needed a little snow to make them fantastic at the edges (got that on the 17th).
Not many Brits or Snowheads there! Be prepeared to be pestered for your lift pass at the end of the day!
