Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Good question. I've been involved with them since 1978. First issues used to appear around 20 August.

As far as I'm aware the Daily Mail still publish in August, Snow magazine (a worthwhile freebie, distributed in main ski shops etc) can be expected sometime. The Ski Club's magazine 'Ski and Board' kicks off with an October cover-dated issue, out around the 3rd week of September I think. Then there's Fall Line. Don't know when they first issue.

I'd expect the Daily Mail to be first out of the starting gate, so watch the newstands.

If you want US magazines like Ski, Skiing or Powder try newsagents in London's Soho (that doesn't mean they're on the top shelf). In particular, there's a shop in Old Compton Street which has an amazing array of international magazines.

David Goldsmith, Borders sell Ski, Skiing and Powder, plus loads of other international magazines on bizarre subjects like Feng Shui and Woodcarving!

ginger winger, ski mags vary a lot in terms of content and theme. 'Powder' has a long tradition of soul, spirit and adventure - with superb photography. Plake's reminded me that you don't have to go to Soho to find it - I recall seeing it in Borders too.

Ski and Skiing are more mainstream US magazines, with similar content. If you want to know about hardware for 05/06, get their special Buyer's Guide issues, which should be out any time now. Most of the primary UK ski magazines should be in the big branches of WH Smith etc. over the next 4-5 weeks, so have a look and compare.

ginger winger, if you have any French, I find french ski mags (eg Skieur) a gazillion times better than their English counterparts. Montagnes is great also, although, as the name suggests, it's about general mountain sports. In the winter it has stuff on skiing but the emphasis is definitely on ski-touring.

The Japanese ski magazines used to be the biggest of the lot - quite incredibly huge. I haven't seen one for years, and the Japanese industry has taken a dive, so maybe they're not what they were.
I was never very good on the language, but the photos were fascinating, as is the crazed obsession with ski equipment over there.

First issue of Powder dropped through my letter box ten days ago. Only $12 for a six issues subscription delivered to UK. Fall line skiing is due out mid September.

Dark summer is a great magazine that was distributed free via some ski shops last winter. Not sure when the first one is due this year.

I usually find I can skim most of the interesting stuff out of magazines in WH Smiths at lunchtimes.

Say there are 5 articles. Read the opening paragraph and the conclusion. If it is still of interest, read the rest of it.

Occasionally I might buy a magazine if there is information I will return to - but that does not happen very often.

Highlights from the American ski magazines are on the net anyway.

of course comes from the fact that when they go skiing they want to improve, not just ski. It's not enough to say at the end of the day that you had come down a black run, but that you had done so using a variety of turning techniques, were always in control and mindful of those around you! (The exceptions to this are those which reach the press and are reported here)
The mags continue to be quite large: first of the season has 3 supplements; resorts, equipment and of course clothing/accessories...this year's theme being Torino, Torino and more Torino....did you know that the Universita di Scienze Gastronomiche which offers a Masters in Food Culture is situated in Pollenzo, quite close to Torino?! One of Japan's current fascinations is with Slow Food.
The industry has taken a dive so skiing/boarding has become more affordable with the equivalent of Uniqlo selling sports model skis/bindings/boots for about 150pounds a set....but of course those who regularly spend 40-50days on the pistes will happily fork out 350-450 pounds for a good pair of skis/bindings plus 250 pounds for boots....same as the UK?

I am not sure I would put that interpretation on it.

I reckon they are just suckers for electronic gizmos and sports equipment. More so than their European counterparts, who will put a lot of cash into housing.

When I was in Whistler the Japanese were mob-handed and they all had expensive Norwegian national team jackets and bibs with their names on. That does not help you to improve, it is just a fashion thing.

It's the same as golf. The Harry Redknapps always have the latest and most expensive equipment - but it is a hard to get a game in Japan. Allegedly, they spend all their time in driving ranges.

I see them at the range at the end of my road. Mr. Salaryman comes in his suit straight from the office, where he is joined by wifey and junior. The whole thing is like a tea ceremony with much warming up exercise, posturing and zen-like concentration. In contrast, the locals just roll up and get through a bucket in no time.

If you have the misfortune to get stuck behind them on a course they are often poncing about and videoing one another. They won't let the Koreans through either, but the Koreans let them through.

Chris Brookes,

They are worth buying from time to time - but they do tend to repeat the same formula over and over. An article on ski touring in Alaska, a feature on the best resorts for families, a small paragraph about the latest gadgets.

But then they are about skiing so I will pick them up off the shelf before I pick up Heat!

Chris Brookes, have you seen Dark Summer yet? Our first issue will be out on or around 1 October this year. For those who don't know, we are a free magazine that you can pick up in ski stores and artificial ski slopes all around the UK. You can also subscribe for £5 for 4 issues (to cover the cost of postage) and then you can get it hitting your doormat each month. I don't want to do too much of a sales pitch on here 'cos I know people don't want to read that, but if you (or anyone for that matter) want more info, feel free to send me a message.

Good for you, DarkSummer. Your magazine continues a long tradition of free (literally!) press in the UK. Some moons ago, for instance, there was a wacky magazine based in Edinburgh called Inside Edge.

I do believe your main rival now is 'Snow', though its content is maybe more mainstream.

Why do you give Dark Summer away free? You seem to be a super generous person!
