Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

8 year old boots...time for new?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hmm, just realised my boots were purchased in 2003! I added in new zipfit liners last year, but how long do the plastics last on a boot?

Is there a way to 'test' the plastics at all?

They are comfortable, but starting to think they maybe close to end of life!

The footbed is probably 8 years old as well!

I've done 96 days in them and probably 2 weeks total in fridges doing BASI L1 and shadowing...

Interested in what folk think?

Cheers,

Greg

kitenski, Greg - If you're happy with the fit and they are comfy/ do what it says on the tin keep 'em, but like most things they do get brittle with age and can shatter, and also its good to have newer kit so it doesnt let you down when you most need them in my opinion.

I bought a pair of new Black Diamond Boots freeride last year and have a brilliant pair of size 8 Tecnica Diablo Magma Hiperfit (heat mould to foot, easily remouldable by reheating) advanced/ expert boots for sale if you want to have a look, live locally. both in Leeds area? Not looking for mad money, 2007/8 I think. I put new toe and heel plastics on them, so soles now as new, elsewhere excellent condition and not smelly! PM me know if you want me to email some photos of the Diablos.......... mega boots BTW.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Would you chuck away a pair of shoes that are 96 days old, are comfortable, and fit nicely?
I know some people who have had the same boots 15 years because they are so comfy.
If the plastic is splitting/cracking, then maybe, but if not, i'd keep them.
My boots are 8 years old, and are like slippers, so i am not changing until the fall off me.

Like the others say if they are in good condition still, comfy and work don't fix what isn't broken!

If you have custom foot beds, they will probably outlast your next pair of boots, which you can probably hold off on buying in any case

The refurb with the new liners should have tightened things up for you. I guess the danger is unconciously letting comfort become more important than performance ... a boot must get sloppier as it gets older.
Having said that, my 13-year-old Salomons are doing fine. The new liners from Profeet which I put in last season have made a huge improvement in how my skiing feels and they're like slippers now.
They've also shown me how loose my old boots had become without me noticing.

But hey, shout yourself a gear splurge...buy a new pair. Think of all that techie stuff and boot fitting lingo you're gonna get to learn. It sounds like you spend a lot of time in them so make sure you've got the best you can afford.
