Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Where to go in Austria early March?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We (myself, Mrs Paellahead, Richard E and Iscream) are planning a trip in March. We have never been to Austria so thought that this should be remedied.
For those of you that do not know us, we are all mature in years but not necessarily in actions and enjoy a (usually) quiet drink in the evenings along with a reasonable amount of intermediate-level skiing in the day.
We do not like to walk miles in ski boots (ski in ski out preferable).
We do like picturesque scenery.
We do like to drink a nice hot chocolate on the mountain and eat nice food on the mountain and in the resort.
Loud apres ski is generally not our thing.
We are not off-piste hounds though we do occasionally venture between pistes.

Because we have local flights to Salzburg, I have been looking at Ellmau and Schladming but would be grateful for some snowHead s wisdom for alternative suggestions (preferably with reasons wink ).

Thanks in advance.

From your requirements I'm sure Schladming would be a good match. Plenty of gentle apres ski around, loads of decent intermediate piste skiing, stunning scenery. If you do cross country or fancy giving it a go then there's literally hundreds of miles of loops nearby, particularly at Ramsau. Other options are Flachau, Zell am See, Wagrain, Zauchansee (more ski resort than town), Obertauern (purpose built, high altitude, missing some austrian charm). Take a look on the www.skiamade.co.uk website, this covers a host of resorts on a single pass most within an hour of salzburg.

Freddie Paellahead, if you have the budget, Oberlech would be hard to beat. Would take around 3/3.5 hours on train to Langen am Arlberg though, then 10 mins in taxi.

Freddie Paellahead, We chose Wagrain for xmas as it is central in the Ski Amade and is a lovely little town. We also considered Alpendorf which is linked by piste. Both have some lovely hotels.

We went for Wagrain as it is just so centrally placed for the skiing, fantastic value on and off the mountain, cheap 45 minute transfers, loads of suitable skiing (not much gnarl though), fantastic and modern lift system, great snow record, not many brits.

We are staying in a budget hotel in the town but right next to the bus stop.

We have also been to Radstadt twice and to Schladming and loved both. Radstadt is a great place to stay if you have a car or friendly host (flangesax) but a very quiet town and everywhere is by bus.

Schladming is much bigger, has 4 mountains, all lift linked, and some great skiing. It had a feel of commercialism and modernity about it that Radstadt, and hopefully Wagrain, did not have. Not a bad thing, but just explaining the difference. People think that many of the places in the Ski Amade are small and insignificant They are not, te skiing areas are HUGE. It is also a ski area very suited to the 2 laydeees going Smile

Thanks boabski, I've looked at Oberlech in the past but was a bit daunted by the transfers.

Freddie Paellahead, I know both Wagrain and Alpendorf very well so if you need any help with the hotels you find, let me know. Alpendorf will give you more choice for ski in/ ski out à la your experience in France. Wagrain gives you a more authentic Austrian feel, so it is swings and roundabouts really.

I agree with Frosty the Snowman's evaluation of Schladming and Radstadt. The skiing at Schladming is fantastic, but unless you are in the pedestrian zone of the old town, there is no real charm in the town. It is a town that has skiing attached, rather than an "Alpine village" type kitsch.

I like staying in Radstadt or Altenmarkt - I'm not into wild all night apres ski discos etc. A bit of fun at the end of the day's skiing in one of the bars at the bottom of the slopes is my limit really. I like to go out for a nice meal or just relax (read die of exhaustion these days Laughing ). I also like the spa facilities, either at the hotel I'm using or in one of the public spas dotted around the region. I find Altenmarkt and Radstadt perfect jumping off points for any of the resorts in that area of the Salzburgerland Super Ski region. But I drive there and have my car always at my disposal.

If I'm indulging myself, I stay at one of the 4* Superior hotels in Alpendorf and basically ski until I drop then pig out on the food and wallow in the swimming pools/spas.

Freddie Paellahead, You won't get agreat deal of ski in ski out in Austria, particularly in March - other than Oberlech which others have already mentioned - its fantastic but expensive.
Look at Saalbach Hinterglem or Kitzbuhel - Kitz itself can be expensive but you can stay in Kirchberg or towards Pass Thurn which links to the same area. - likewise we usually travel in a group of 40-50 year olds and cant do the 3am night clubs (well if we do we cant ski the next day) buth Saalbach is great with tons of skiing and good apres without being over-the-top. You'll love Austria - enjoy

Freddie Paellahead, you may find it difficult to get good slopeside accommodation in Schladming itself, but apart from the race pistes, the rest of the area will be more than OK. Most of the teams will train at Reiteralm and possibly be based at Pichl right by the training slopes.

Let me know which of the hotels take your fancy! I've been in most of them and have stayed at several!

gallacher, a popular misconception about Austria. There is plenty of "ski in/ ski out accommodation, but as it rarely appears in UK Tour Operator's brochures, the urban myth has developed! The ski in/ski out accommodation is usually fairly well booked by regular custom and relies on word of mouth to maintain their occupancy levels wink I deal directly with the hotels and apartments usually finding out about it either from personal observation or via the "Mundpropaganda". You just have to get in early and make a decision in order to get what you want, when you want it.

Obergurgl/Hochgurgl not been but looks to have plenty of ski in/out accom and hotels with good restaurants, apres on the quieter side for Austria. Scenery is great. Or Hochsölden (not Sölden in the valley with its raucous apres) was tiny collection of hotels when we went, may have expanded since. Great views every day ski in/out accom. and good food and hotels.

e.g., the OP has flights to Salzburg already booked so anything being looked at has to be within easy transfer from there.

Sölden or any of the Gurgls is at least 3.5 hours transfer if there are no hold ups! Believe me I know as I was there last week. It took me 2 hours and that was on a quiet weekend wink

Are the hotels in Obergurgl/Hochgurgl proper ski in/out? I thought most of the hotels in Obergurgl required either a walk or bus to the gondola/chairlifts. I know a few require a short walk to one of the learner slopes from where they can ski down to the gondola station. But is this the same as proper ski in/out? And I also thought the hotels in Hochgurgl required a walk to the actual slopes?

Frosty the Snowman, I sent Freddie Paellahead that in a PM.

Something that is worth looking at for all the weeks in Ski Amadé outside of the Peak Season weeks, is that they offer packages ( Pauschal/en) which include a ski pass with the accommodation. So at the Sonnhof which I know well, the week they are considering is called a Firnwoche (spring Snow weeks) the prices for 3/4 board start at 979 Euro including ski pass.

All the hotels down in St Johann town offer even cheaper prices for the same packages and run you up and down to the slopes in their minibuses. I've seen 4 star hotels in town offering the same package starting at 750 Euro. And a hotel right in the town centre that I have stayed in many times (Stöcklwirt) is offering the package at 600 Euro for a basic room with en suite.

Frosty the Snowman, thanks for that suggestion which I had already looked at following Samerberg Sue's PM. Probably slightly out of our league!
Samerberg Sue found us a good deal on another hotel which I am trying to persuade Richard E and Iscream is a good idea. They are keen to go back to Wengen.
(SS, we haven't actually booked the flights to Salzburg yet, but there are direct flights from Southampton (15 mins down the road)).

FlyingStantoni, It's not it's own per se, the Blue School has been around for ages, whereas the Sonnhof is relatively new. If I remember correctly is is just about 10 years old max. Hans Hoellwart is one of the senior instructors with the school and his Dad worked with them too.

Freddie Paellahead, Looks good for me too. I'm looking at booking at least one week there and maybe another at the Berghof. I've just got to sort out when I can ask for time off. I have masses of time due but just need to plan it carefully.

Freddie Paellahead,
I see that several contributors have recommended Saalbach, which has plenty of ski-in ski-out accommodation, as well as a large, varied, (principally intermediate) ski area and a lively apres-ski atmosphere (that you can embrace or ignore, according to your mood and preference).
Let me know if you would like information, including our own comprehensive guide to Saalbach-Hinterglemm, which many snowHead s have found useful, and some have been kind enough to describe as 'fantastic'.
I agree that the Hinterhag Hotel would be the ultimate (and literal) ski-in ski-out experience (you ski back into the hotel) - it was my step-daughter's and her husband's wedding hotel a couple of years ago, so any information will be gladly supplied. However there are many other similar options.

cathy, Wow they are going up market! I've often been in the Oberforsthof and its "Hütte, the Oberforsthofalm. It is the only true 5* hotel in Alpendorf, although the Zinnkrugel and the Berghof have just the same ambience as 4*Superior. The Alpina counts itself a being in the best position, but I just don't like it. I've stayed there twice and some how it lacks the atmosphere that the other family-run hotels have. It is just very, very impersonal, despite having the best position and fabulous facilities, I find it and the personnel very very cold! Just like being in a multinational any where except when you look outside, there is snow and skiing.

The Rothirsch used to be called the Pichler and is diagonally opposite the Oberforsthof and a wee bit below the Alm. The same family that own the Sonnhof own the Rothirsch. They used to do the best Kaiserscharmn in Alpendorf and the celler bar is a riot of an evening if the right crowd are about!

The positions of the hotels are perfect for ski in ski out! For the Oberforsthof, you just ski to the road take off your skis and a few steps away you are in your hotel. For the Rothirsch you can virtually ski into the back door! wink

Samerberg Sue, thanks for that! The Oberforsthof is actually a pretty good price for a 5*, mid-Jan it was £899. We're staying at the Rothirsch which was something like £585 - I hope the Kaiserscharmn is still good - my fave! Very Happy
