Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

When is the best time for an intermediate to go to Hemel?

Hi guys,

I know a lot of you spend time at Hemel. I live in St Albans, so I'm thinking I've no real excuse not to get along myself!

I've been on my own a couple of times but got bored pretty quickly just going up and down the mini hill. When's a good time to go when it might be a bit more challenging, and there's a good chance that there are people around to talk to and perhaps give a bit of advice?

I'm a typical Brit intermediate - happy on reds, psych myself up to do a few blacks, but probably pretty lacking in good technique. I'm hoping to get a bit of practice in before my trip to La Tania in January.

Thanks!
Mairead

Maireadoconnor, http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=77473#1810480 this thread is used by people who regularly meet up at Hemel, usually once a month. There's a link to a poll to see who will be attending and if you skip to the end of the thread you'll find the most recent comments. It's looking like there will be a meet up this saturday possibly 6 - 10pm. Some people find working on drills is a good way to relieve the boredom, others go for the cameraderie.

Maireadoconnor, this is the latest chatter on meeting up this saturday (29th Oct) http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=77473&start=280#1881500 if you fancy it then drop a line on the thread so we know who to look out for. Things probably wont be finalised until friday but the more people going the more likely it is that it'll happen.

Maireadoconnor, personally I've found fridges a good place to work on a technique in a focused group, there's a couple of snowheads who run specialised clinics at Hemel, perhaps they would work for you?

^ all the above is good advice. Strictly speaking I think the best time to go is early morning when its quietest when you've got best chance of a clear run/line to focus on what you want. If you just go to ski its pretty boring but if you work on stuff (even if its not artificial drills) it can be fun. once kids lessons get on the slope en masse it all tends to be a little more difficult to navigate.

Maireadoconnor, I used to do a lot of road running (not that you'd know to look at me now). I think of the slope at Hemel in the same way I used to regard a running track. Pretty boring by itself but valuable as a training aid, and good fun if you are there with a bunch of mates.

I agree with the above suggestions, get yourself to the Inside Out all day clinics, the day just flies past and you'll never be bored. Also come along to one of the Snowheads meet ups.

Look forward to seeing you at Hemel.

Edit

I forgot to add that if you want a quiet slope ski at Hemel early evening. The place goes dead at around 5.00pm then gets busy again at 7.00. Slope is closed from (I think) 6.00pm on Monday evenings for the Hemel race club, and Friday night is freestyle night so there's lots of furniture in the way, they start building the features on Thursday. There you go, ski 5-7pm on Tues and Wed evenings. Little Angel

Thanks everyone! I'm going to try to get along this Saturday, and the inside out clinics look good.
Sadly I don't get back from work til 7ish so early evenings wont work. The human slalom at busy times is good practice for if I go back to Les Arcs tho!
I hope to meet some of you soon.

Or you could.... join the race club for the 8.00pm session! last Monday you would have got the chance to share the whole slope with only about 10 others, no time to get bored with lots of drills to endure, sorry- "master" you'll even get to ski around all manner of coloured pole/brush thingy's. snowHead

Things have got more sensible near the end of the day - 1/2 term madness finishes around 6pm. I left at 9 after a day teaching and there were about 20 people out.

If you don't want the full Friday evening Freestyle experience they often open one of the jumps earlier in the day (but the other hardware does reduce the skiing slope considerably).
First thing in the morning (especially weekdays) is nice and empty which means an unobstructed descent (important if you want to go fast and choose your own path). On Wednesdays that's 8.00am.
