Jayne, there are quite a few. Ours was almost opposite the station as you arrive in Zermatt. We picked them up en-route to the chalet. With your back to the station just look opposite and to the right, across the square where the horse/carriages are. It may be SkiSet, I'm not sure, but the ski hire bit was downstairs and very good. One of our group broke and pole and they replaced it without charge.
Are you a SCGB member? You will get discount. Also SkiSet offer a big discount for skis booked over the web.

Jayne, I don't know what you are doing for food, but on our chalet night off, we spent a happy evening in Le Mazot. A smartish restaurant with lovely food (mainly meat - I had v. tender lamb) The kitchen/chefs are in the open so you can watch them work. I would probably book if you go.
We also had fun in the Poppalapub in the town. If you take the 1b run home, join the blue 2c to the left, go past Bar Olympia and keep going down into Zermatt, you will eventually end up (or maybe even ski up) to the pub. Lively outdoor bit
If you do need lessons, Stoked school (Roger is good and speaks English) do v. good private & groups lessons (again you get SCGB discount).

thanks again... will certainly look out the pub! We're staying at the hotel Admiral - courtesy of Tesco clubcard vouchers!... so evening meals will be in the hotel - and if Zermatt is as expensive as we've heard - it will probably be a mars bar and water for lunch (except I've promised myself a trip to Chez Vrony - recommended by a number here)
... sounds like you know Zermatt well. We've never stayed there - we skied over to the near side from Cervinia last year..
cant wait... but then it will be a long wait till next season....

Jayne,
I have tried a few hire shops in Zermatt past 2 seasons and I would now really recommend Flexrent. The reason being that they will store your kit overnight and move it between lift stations if you tell them where you will be skiing the next day, this is all free of charge! They also have new, very well maintained kit with a good choice. And they were good about changing skis through the week, my husband tried 3 pairs!
It's great because as you will find out Zermatt is a big resort and there is a lot of walking to be done! So anything that means you don't have to carry your kit about is a big improvement.
They have 2 shops one just opposite the Sunnega Express base station and the other at the bottom of the Matterhorn Express base station (this one is also called Dorsaz sport). If you are staying at the Admiral you are almost right across from the Sunnega base station and so the Flexrent shop will be almost next door. They are open 8 am til 7pm, ask for Matthias young chap at the Sunnega shop and very helpful. Pretty sure they we got discount for SCGB too.
For ski instructors I can recommend Thomas Biner at the Swiss school and John Taylor (English guy) at Stoked both excellent. If you plan any lessons book in advance, can get very booked up.
If you need to know anything else post again, restaurant tel nos, directions, suggestions for where to ski etc etc..
As Beverley said you will love it, we had 8 days last year and went back for 12 this! And when we were in Cervinia at New Year we skied 4 days in Zermatt!! Hooked!

thanks to both of you... dont like the sound of all this walking though! We'll usually ski miles to avoid walking a few metres!
Dont think we can afford lessons this time - but I'll keep the names... thanks

jayne durham, Zermatt is no more expensive than the big French resorts like Val or Courchevel.
Another top lunchtime stop is the Fluhalp. The Sunday Times (I think) called it the world's best mountain restaurant !

I've used Dorsaz as well, they seemed pretty good.

2 who I use were Anorak (great for touring kit) and Bayard Sport - BIG range of ski models - both stores on main street as you come out the train station - have fun, a cracking resort and if you have the chance to do some touring the views are spectacular and terrain incredible.

You know it makes sense.

I always take a walk round these shops to get the skis I have shortlisted. I used both shops in the vicinity of the station, can't remember the names, but BAyard sounds very familiar
I hire premium skis rather than look for price. Most resorts seem have unwritten cartels on prices anyway IMO.

jayne durham,
And you will have to walk a lot but stopping off at the Murphy's bar will help.
I like walking home after a few beers and at least Zermatt village is pretty flat.
Tip.. the Gornagrat is very slow but worth doing onces in good weather as the views are great. Often not busy..for that reason... and after a night at the Murphy's bar it may take you the 40mins to wake up...!!
