Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Didn't thing this belonged in snow reports or resorts, since it's just specualtion, but has anyone head advanced reports/guesses of what the snow will be like in America's north west this season (specifically whistler snowHead )?
Or reports of what snow will be like anywhere for that matter? After a pretty poor 04/05 season, I start to worry about global warming permanently wrecking skiing Shocked

Somewhere else there was a thread noting that (apparently) one of the (apparently) major influences on our short term climate, the "North Atlantic Oscillation" which has an approx 10 year cycle i.e. flows one way for 10 years then switches - has just switched so we can (apparently) expect broadly similar conditions to between 1984-1996. IIRC the thread, (apparently) drier, cooler, sunnier in general over the winter.

Phew, thank goodness I'm up for a firm opinion this morning...

David Murdoch, The NAO is pretty local to us, not much use for BC Laughing

Put crudely, it describes roughly how much of our weather consists of systems sweeping in off the atlantic. If it's positive then most of the UK's weather is coming from the SW and W, if it's negative then we are experiencing more "blocks", stopping the usual areas of low pressure from tracking across us. This tends to lead to N'ly and E'ly weather which is generally colder and snowier.

This year the met office are predicting a negative NAO snowHead

Paul Holland, if you want some pessimism, the met office only claim a 66% success rate in predicting the sign of the NAO using their model with past historical data.

And even if the NAO is negative, if the blocking high pressures are in the wrong place it can be too mild or cold enough but too dry or ....

Still, a hopeful sign Very Happy
