The big news is that the Lake District Ski Club will be 75 this year. That makes it the second oldest ski club in England after the Ski Club of Great Britain. Happy birthday !
Part of the Club’s celebration is a new project which should make their facilities on Raise even more comfortable for users. The club is building a toilet. It will be the second highest toilet in England (the one in the Great Dun Fell radar station is 100m higher). It will be located in a small extension to the engine hut and should be a pleasant, warm, full flushing affair.
Getting all the materials up there has been a big logistical task. It has involved delivery of everything to the Greenside lead mine, four wheel drive from there up to Kepple Cove and then a rather hairy ATV climb from there up to the summit. The ski tow itself has then been used in ‘aerial ropeway’ mode, to download materials to the engine hut. Some of the wood also been carried up manually from the Club car park.
The entire project is in pictures here:

Other work at Raise this summer has involved replacing some of the old snow fencing, painting and maintenance work to the wheel and pylon arm assemblies.
Across the Eden valley in the North Pennines it has also been a busy summer at Yad Moss although without such a high profile project. The biggest job has been undergrounding some more of the signal line which carries the safety circuit from the control room up to the summit. This has involved digging a trench by hand and laying a wire 250m between pylon 5 and pylon 3. Once connected we will remove the overhead line and thereby reduce icing problems, hopefully making start up quicker on ski days.
Pylon 5 uphill arm has also been dismantled, removed, shot blasted and painted and its steel wheels replaced with alloy ones. Several other line wheels have also been removed for shot blasting and painting. The whole Poma catcher assembly at the summit has been redesigned and re constructed. More minor jobs have included drainage, fence repairs, painting, cleaning and servicing the generator. The grass has been cut over many of the runs and the whole site is looking quite neat and tidy. We still have more to do but are starting to think about the snow once again.
Yad Moss season tickets go on general sale from the 1st October. Adults £48 and juniors (under 16) £10. Day tickets will be £20 for adults and £10 for juniors on weekends. On good days we may limit or stop the sale of Day Tickets to reduce queuing. Details will be available on the website.
Does anyone have any news from Weardale, Harwood Common or Allenheads?

That really is a superb name for a record-breaking toilet.
