Timbobaggins, honestly keeping an eye on TK Max, or NF outlet stores in Bicester, other online outlet stores, last years stock in your local ski shop are going to be your best bet..... The 'high end' kit that has Goretex and is both waterproof and breathable costs £££££

Look for clothes with lots of zip up vents. No fancy fabric (good as it may be) beats vents for keeping you comfortably cool.

Timbobaggins, Sounds like a tight budget for anything half decent, like above best bet is Decathlon or TK's, not the best time of year to be getting bargains on ski gear, that's summer. Can you borrow and go for TNF or similar when at target weight, there's a shop in Otley called Glide and Slide that hire out gear I believe, worth a call, they specialise in school trips and may have some suitable gear?

Another, completely different, solution might be to rent gear for this next holiday. Who knows, you might have regained all that weight again by the following holiday.  Or become even thinner.

Never happened to me... I would often ski with trouser vents fully open (I mean the vents along the legs - the important one at the front stays closed  ) and haven't had snow getting in.
I can see how that may happen in deep pow..

Ooh yes and it does say expect to put on a few pounds when going from weight loss to Maintenance, i went from 13 5 to 13 7.
Also this weekend we went to British Superbikes at Silverstone for three days and both of us had a bit of a blow out and put on a couple of pounds each, so we just get back on weight loss phase for a week and that seems to shift it.
The good thing is it teaches you to watch your weight, we weigh ourselves every monday morning, if we have upped a couple of pounds we just go hard diet for a week, its easy to keep a couple of pounds off.
Both myself and Mrs B had not dared stand on scales for ages prior to this diet
I looked back through my weight loss diary and i averaged 3lb a week loss

I've got about 700 quid's worth of top-end Halti gear, that cost me about 120 quid in TK Maxx.
At your budget, if you poke your nose in the air and steadfastly avoid TK Maxx, you'll be 200 quid down and sat in some dowdy leaky ill-fitting bin-bag resembling Protest or Trespass shite. Or you can scum it with the proles for 15 minutes in TK Maxx and have some totally decent Helly/Orage/ACG gear or whatever. Your call mate, but, y'know.

Not a bad idea. My OH has a pair of excellent pants bought for £75 in T K Maxx 5 years ago. They've done 5 seasons, they look very good, they are waterproof and breathable. I think they're Rossignol. I've also spent several comfortable seasons in a "Trespass shite" jacket (£50 in TKMaxx) with no complaints. My current jacket (Head) was 65% off in a Filarinskis sale.
My current pants are Colombia - not exactly a top name, but they've been good. I must have done about 26 solid weeks of skiing in them. They were £10 ex-hire (practically as good as new) in Filarinskis.
People who bootpack up mountains and spend nights in a bivvy on a ledge on the North Face of the Eiger need top notch gear. Most of us, frankly, don't. The better specified ranges in Decathlon are perfectly fine.
Of course, if it turns you on to have big name gear, and money is no object, then it's a nice buy and is good for the economy. And maybe somebody will think you do bootpack up mountains. But I prefer to spend any spare money on lessons - and the odd nice lunch!!

or folk who will ski in rain 'cos it's snowing at the top....or forecast to turn to snow..............rain really tests your waterproofness!!

Timbobaggins, nice one on the diet. I have also had good deals a tk maxx but they seem to be fewer and further between, anyhow how come your budget is so tight, you deserve a reward and you should have saved loads on booze and food.

If you are really on tight budget you could do worse than wait to see what Aldi/Lidl come up with this year, £50 or £60 spent there will get you gear that is easily a match in terms of quality for £150 to £200 spent somewhere a bit more mainstream and their gear seems to get better every season.

On the cheap kit front, if you happen to be anywhere near a Ski Show it might be worth sticking your head in (assuming you can find a free ticket somewhere) as S&R (and maybe EB) often have a 'clearout' rail on their stalls that sells off their remaining old stock. I picked up some Goretex trousers for £100 that are holding up fine so far. I think it's pretty hit and miss though, so I reckon TK Maxx and Decathlon are better bets overall.
Good work on the weight loss though!

I honestly wonder who ever pays full price for Sweet/Norrona/Haglofs/etc, there are always so many jackets and salopettes in >half price sales every summer - like the oh so tempting Sweet one atm.

I'd also say, look at the ski shows - especially any that are not at Olympia, if such things exist. What I mean is, the ski shows that look like a giant jumble sale. I got a superb pair of Columbia trousers for around £90, down from at least double that, some years ago at the Manchester Ski Show - near top end, Goretex and very warm except when the vents are undone. Trouble is, I'll soon need your diet to get into them!

Probably the best quality / performing budget water proof gear that I know of. RRP is about 70 notes, but you can get jackets and trousers in online sales for circa 40. Very waterproof - For the money its fantastic kit, good range of colours and a nice cut. Sprayway also make some fantastic non gore-tex jackets as well.
FWIW I also own a much more expensive gore-tex jacket - but would happily ski in the cheaper 'marmot precip' gear (that I use for summer hillwalking etc).

Timbobaggins, damn, if you hadn't lost so much weight, I'd happily have sold you a 3-week worn Degre7 jacket for about £80 (£190 new) that is now too large for me having also lost weight....

Well it's very time consuming (repeatly visiting multiple stores) and if it's a repeat of last year they (in the main) only had Trespass, Protest and Dare2B stuff at prices you get online.
