Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Costco - stocking snow chain equivalents

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just a heads up that in Costco at the moment they appear to be selling some new variation on snowchains with a sort of nylon webbed version of a chain for about £50 plus the dreaded...

Having a dig around in t'internet, they are made by Michelin and called easygrip - a composite linked material with metal 'links'

More here : http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/michelin-easygrip-composite-snow-chains.aspx

No idea on longevity but an interesting option over say snowsocks

Cheers

What do people think about these?
I'm driving out to Tignes at the end of November so looking for chains at the moment. I won't be using the car most of the time i'm there so am reluctant to splash out on proper chains as I know i'll be able to wait if it snows heavily.

They look interesting for me as they appear to be low profile. My car doesn't have a lot of clearance so these could be just the trick. Cheaper than some of the other alternatives I've seen.

Just bought some of these this week. Looked at them last winter but got some cheaper sock types. Ive since changed car and therefore tyre size so needed some more. Really pleased at that price - 59 including.

They look exceeding expensive compared to the usual metal chains.

Lizzard, you may not pay that much for chains where you are. I think £59 is reasonable compared to some of the chains I've seen.

ADAC have criticised the Easygrip for poor longevity but they seem ideal for limited use on 'low profile' cars:

I don't know why cables like the Iceberg high Grips in the ebay link above aren't more widely used in Europe. Cheaper, lower profile, easier to fit (wth separate rubber tensioners) and less of a liability to wrap round the axle. Downside is reduced durability but they'll easily last a winter if you dry and oil them.

fatbob, At the ebay price they are very appealing, especially if they are low profile. I don't expect to use them much if at all, just as an emergency job in the UK.
