Can anyone with good first hand Alberta knowledge let me know what and where are the closest/best resorts to Edmonton?
Thank you.

You can drive to Banff and L.Louise from Edmonton, altho' Calgary is the obvious choice for them. The nearest resort I know of is Jasper, which is quite jolly.
The ski area (known as Marmot Basin, I think) is not huge, altho' it's increased since I was there (4 or 5 years ago) and there's a good variety of skiing. It was more or less empty; at one time, the 8 of us appeared to be the only people on the whole mountain. We stayed a week, by which time we'd had enough, but everything depends on your standard and preferences.
The town is OK, quiet, not too ski oriented apart from the relatively large nuber of hotels. The surrounding area is, obviously, beautiful, and there are various trips and activities which can be undertaken. The Columbia Icefield, on the road down to the Trans Canada (and Banff/LL) is worth a look, and there's snowshoeing etc, etc. Jasper is a big railway junction, and from some places on the hill you can see the marshalling yards, which adds to the pleasure (for sad old me, anyway). Lots of elk and other deery things around the town.

Richmond has Jasper in a nutshell.
Little in the way of apres ski, although Whistlestop Pub is good.
Lovely, but others to see before a return.
Take in a ice hockey game - go the Jasper Wolves!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks people. The reason I asked is that I'm considering moving to Edmonton, I understand the skiing is better in LL, but let's be realistic - I need a job too!

Alexandra, we are seriously considering moving to Canmore (having the police checks done as we speak!) Not too sure what jobs we will do when we get there but equity from our house should buy us a house there & hey - who cares after that??? Always fancied setting up my own business.....

richmond, just dreading telling my aged (well, not that old) parents. Going to wait to see if we actually get our residency visa before doing that. I can hear it now - you can't go to live somewhere just because you had a nice holiday there
Oh - and you can't buy a house in Banff until you've worked there 2 years.

wtfh - Vancouver is too big for me and too expensive. I'm a database programmer right now but I'd like to downsize my life and if I were to move to Vancouver I'd have to continue being a corporate whore!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

In terms of proximity, assuming you've no option but to be in Edmonton, Jasper is about 4.5 hours drive, Banff is 5-6 hours drive.
Cathy Coins,
Woo-hoo....living the dream!

Marmot is a great little hill! There is plenty of variable terrain and it is very friendly. As Acacia says, it is really quite a long way from Edmonton, Calgary would be alot closer to ski hills if that were your primary drive!
