Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

German Skiing Recommendations- Braunlage?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Does anyone have recommendations for skiing in Northern Germany that would be relatively accessible from Hamburg the week before Christmas? Much of the group would be first timers or low level skiers. Braunlage & the Wurmburg Gondola seem like they might be an option??

Not very helpful but I skied in that area (St Andreasburg/Silberhutte) almost 30 years ago. We skied adjacent to the East/West German border and took photo's of the East German border guards taking photo's of us. I was a beginner then and remember finding it OK. You could also try Winterberg, South of Paderborn but that is probably further than you need to go. Like I say not much help but a nostalgic trip to the past.

For starters, don't count on there being snow. There might be, but in the past few years there have been times when there's no snow there in Jan/Feb.

But if there is, Braunlage is your best option. It's a small mountain with a few runs. On the weekend (if there is snow and it is open), it is totally packed and expect to wait 30 minutes for each ride up the gondola. But the other areas in the Harz Mountains are generally comprised of a couple drag lifts on a short, gentle slope. Although I guess that's fine for the first timers.

I go xc skiing there quite often, and it is great for that. But I would never go there for downhill skiing. It just isn't very good.

As for the town, I like Braunlage, but it has certainly seen better days. The sort of place that got a lot of tourism 30 years ago, but in the age of cheap air travel nobody ever goes to anymore.

If you want to go someplace for a whole week, get a cheap flight to the alps. If you are going for a day or two it might be ok. If there is any snow.
