Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

May be a silly question, but going to Les Arcs 1950 - will I be able to rent a ski helmet there or will I have to buy one before I go? Also, if I rent, can I attach video camera (small HD camcorder Muvi Pro Gumball 3000) to it, or will they not let me

thanks

Yep - if you google it a few ski hire shops come up with helmets. Dunno about the camera

I hired a full face helmet to try out mountain biking last month. Couldn't wait to get back to the apartment to wash my hair afterwards.

A friend has hired a helmet a couple of times now...he's always moaned about having to wear a hired helmet, and on the last occasion actually went and bought himself one to avoid the hired helmet. Do yourself a favour and by a helmet - if you've got a helmet cam to attach to it then you can afford one.

Renting a helmet, IMO, is a bit like wearing someone else's pants.

If you want a budget CE approved helmet, try Lidl. My mate bought one last year for sixteen quid. Probably cheaper than renting. Coming soon to a store near you.

i would definately just buy my own! last year one of the kids in our group had to rent one (as under 16) in italy, it was pretty horrible! we have our own and to be honest they don't cost a huge amount in the grand scale of skiing holidays anyway!

thanks. think I will buy one. Anyone know what to look for when buying - dont want to spend a lot (less that £40) They are on ebay for £25-35. WIll these do, or do I have to buy an expensive one (health & Safety etc). BCJohnny. What was the Lidl one like. Would like some street cred on the slopes so dont want a dodgy looking one. Do you just pack the helmet in your suitcase??

Jon Ford, This is MInimum_2 in a brand new £16 helmet from the internet - CE approved (as the Lidl ones are) and I think quite acceptable 'look' wise. We all have them - I have the adult size. They have an adjustable head band and fit me better than any pricier one from a posh ski shop. The Lidl ones are very comparable. There is no need to spend a fortune.

thanks Megamum. Minimum looks pretty cool all geared up. Not a bad helmet. I only have a small head, so may be able to blag an extra large kids one! (did that with my goggles 4 years ago, but this year I am venturing out to adult goggles as the over-sized ones look good! Will keep an eye out for discount places, but will make sure they are CE approved
thanks again

Jon Ford, they're fine, no problems. Fully adjustable, CE approved (the important bit) as said, and my mate's is quite stylish. More stylish than mine which was three times more.

Look out for the Thursday winter deal promotion that, IIRC, should be appearing sometime between now and November.

Don't buy on internet unless you can try on that brand in a shop first. It must fit properly or its worse than useless - too large and it could slip and actually cause an injury. Many people do not realise that an unfastened or badly fitting helmet can slip backwards in a fall and break your neck! This is not a reason NOT to wear one however as you never know when it may save your life.

Another 'don't buy without trying' - I reckon I tried on 20 at the Ski and Board Show Last year before I found one that fitted properly and was comfortable.

I hired one in Whistler because the guide wanted me to have one, but it was a poor fit (kept slipping down over my eyes), so I left it in a restaurant till I went down in the evening.
