Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ha, just been talking to my brother in law about a late trip to Chatel next easter. Worrying that going on the 9th April may be too late after last year, we only just managed 3 days skiing in 3 days (2pm finish due to slush) and that was on the 1st April. I take it we could be lucky and there be plenty this year??

1063roberts, book late or book high. Conditions last April were poor BUT the two years prior were very good. If we could predict the weather we would all be rich.

Update on new lifts .... just done 2 1/2 days of GR5 from Lake Geneva (we cheated and starred above Thonon - can't see the point of waking through a town!) and went through Plaine Dranse and also passed by the top of Mossettes. Only did 2 1/2 days as that's all kids and hubbie would allow!!

Lots of work going on in Plaine Dranse for the new chair ..... looking good

Now on Mossettes there is a lot of work going on at the top of the Grand Conche and Cubore -- replacement for Grnad Conche looking good however at the moment lots of the Cubore pylons missing ??? Not sure what the plan is there!!

According to the 'meteo' looks like we are infor snow to 1500m this weekend!! Glad we did our walk this week...

Lou, You may have this small pleasure

Here's hoping for a good season........

It was pretty nippy out on the DH bike today in Pre la Joux. Snow from the top of Pierre Longue lift at 1700m! Luckily I planned ahead and wore an insulated ski jacket and pants! Hands were still pretty nippy though, and feet for that matter!
It was nice to see some snow though, even just a dusting, all the peaks are looking very nice! Another 40cm or so and I would be skinning up the Chesery!

Neilski, Usually a good time then - we were there mid to late June this year and the weather was good then. Les Gets/Morzine side had some lifts open from about 11th June for bikes and I think most others were from weekend of 25th June. Daughter and friends visited first weekend in July and had rather disappointing weather but they have been spoilt in the past without rain but I think the only thing was that they went white water rafting rather than canyoning.

You should be ok with the time you have suggested.

Neilski, Think it would best to check when the lifts are running and plan around that. Mountain weather is always variable.

BergenBergen, absolutely right - looking up the lift opening times is a bit of a nightmare as each and every area/village has its own particular arrangements in the summer eg Wednesday and Sunday in La Grande Turche I think. But I believe there is usually a big biking event around the weekend 26th June and that is when the the Champery link opens.

We just use the lifts when we are there for walking purposes and there are oddities there - I can't understand why the Nauchets lift is only open for MTBs and not walkers for instance - but I am sure there is a reason.

Hi there.
Not sure whether this is the right place to ask but here goes. 8 of us are going to be in Abondance at Christmas/New year and we have a days ski touring booked. Only 4 of us have randonee gear. Is there any where with a good range of hire randonee boots and ski's in the porte de soliel or (very) closeby Puzzled

Neilski, June can be lovely for weather - just as July so difficult to say. The usual huge thunderstorms early evening quite often which can be very dramatic.
We have never been there ourselves late July or August at all but I think August itself gets quite busy but a bit of a buzz is quite good. I have no experience of the biking world so can't speak about that.

Neilski, as the others say, the summer can be very variable. We have been several times in August (2, 3 & 4th weeks) and had everything except snow. This year we had a couple of cracking days and long walks were finished by long vist to the lakeside Very Happy . The village was busy but not heaving. If you eat out then that does require some planning as there are less places open and you may need to book.
I would estimate that the VTT'ers were waiting for no more than 5-10 mins to go up Chavannes Express at peak times.

Hi I am a partner in a bike shop in morzine specialising in high end kit, hire and repairs. This summer was very wet in July and august I would look to go in June as the weather is more settled . We are forever badgering the lift companies to open earlier every year and later into September as the weather in septmebr is usually perfect for biking. The wet weather is still good fun and with the right kit, most of our employees who are rather handy on bikes tend to prefer sliding about in the woods over ice like roots and rocks. Personally I like it dry and dusty and not too hot so June and September is best for me. We should know the lift opening dates pretty soon. My business partners wife works for the portes du soleil so and as soon a s we know the details we post it on our website or check morzinenet which is pretty quick at getting these things up. This year the chevannes in les gets opened first and probably will next year however I rode at Easter this year over in samoens on some awesome trails and there is a group of lads doing shuttle runs over that way which are easy to book up if the lift isnt running. In fact most locals love the interseason when the trails are empty , free of braking bumps and you
have to gain your own gravitySo in summary go for early June sometime around when the passports du soleil is in town or the week after although it's busy ish the town comes alive and there is a great atmosphere in town

Snow gossip....
Is anyone else gutted they can't get a nice cake at the schuss anymore?
Also will the hotel mont Chery have any kind of terrace bar looking out to the chevannes piste?
It seems work has started on fixing up the chevannes TCD
So much reshaping has being done in lindarets near the start of the stash using all the soil from the avoriaz works it looks like a god improvement for that bottle neck
Rochassons replacement lift Should be a bonus but I hear 2 lifts are being demolished?
Heard some rumours of new pleny lift possibly starting where the joux plan roundabout is so it could link with the 3s up to prodains? 3s would start on the pleny and go straight up the valley?
Is mont Chery seeing it's last seasons?
Torgo investing 25 million euros in lifts and snow making
Will avoriaz/serma consider making some new pistes for all these thousands more visitors that avoriaz expanded capacity wll bringi

For more lift gossip you can't beat the forum remontee mechanique... If you like to check out on lift technology and developments there is quite a lot of information about the portes du soleil....oh and if you want a real geek moment spare a moment to look at the mega posting about the chap who has built a ski resort in his garden in miniature. The detail is quite astonishing/ worryingly geeky

Snow level down lower today. 1300 to 1400 at a guess. Even sleeting in the back garden here in Morzine just now.
Better put the snow chains in the minibus just in case. Need to get to Amanda's La Barque tomorrow morning to see if the southern hemisphere can produce two great games like the two today.
Now, do I become a France or Wales supporter for next weekend, oooohhhh dilema's.

Well, first fall of the season last night. Getting from Bar Bush to the car rolling eyes

Lovely dusting of snow at around 1300m. We drove most of the way up from Ardent to Linderats earlier - before thinking better of it as the shadier bits of road had much more snow than either I or the car was prepared for.

FlyingStantoni, we will be skiing as a family of three this year as rather than a 'one off' 'dare' type outing, Public Enemy intends to wear his every day Shocked

Although the wicking capability might put paid to that.
