Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Transceiver training - Edinburgh

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
As the ski season is fast approaching - well, kind of - I've started my usual thoughts that I have this time of year, wondering what the snow will be like this season. Today, I'm wondering if I'll ever be buried in it and what would I do if I was, or if someone I was skiing with was.

Would any other snowheads like to have a get together, possibly up the Pentland Hills to have some transceiver practice?

I've not actually had to use my transceiver but I'd like to get some training in. I'll admit to being a novice in this area and would be grateful for any more knowledgeable snowheads to join the group.

I'm thinking the area up behind Bonaly would be a good test as there's lots of rocks, trees etc to hide people/equipment behind to enable the search to begin.

Any takers?

Probably looking at some time in October to get this going.

I'd be keen for that. Same situation, I've never had to use and am defiantly a bit rusty!

If anyone wishes to buy BCA Tranceivers I have 2 BCA Tracker 1 models for sale, I have just bought 2 of the newer models overseas for myself and Mrs Markymark59 and am keen to sell the others (only 3 years old and in perfect working condition, thankfully never used).

I'd be happy with £140 each, £225 rrp. PM me if interested. Can arrange to meet up and hand over if reasonably close. Rather sell here than on eb*y.

Who's good for Sunday 13th, Saturday 19th or Sunday 20th ? Much later in the month than that & I'd be expecting to be taking advantage of my season pass. snowHead

BTW, I received an email recently from Snowsport Scotland & copied in the dates / info for their training courses this coming season. I did a Freeriders 1 course at Glenshee last season ... http://www.winterhighland.info/publicreports/index.php?50,2599 ... which included a mock avalanche rescue c/w timed rescue & found it so useful that I've enrolled on part 2 at Cairngorm.

Enrollment forms here ... http://www.snowsportscotland.org/find-a-course

-----------------

Saturday 21st of January - Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 1 Cairngorm Mountain.

Sunday 22nd of January – Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 2 Cairngorm Mountain.

Sunday 12th of February – Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 1 Glencoe Mountain Resort.

Sunday 26th of February – Avalanche Awareness for Freeeriders 2 Glenshee Ski Centre.

------------------

Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders (1) - After much interest and positive feedback from the pilot courses, there have been further courses developed for winter 2012. Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders (1) will be similar to the pilot courses of 2011, with a rough outline below:

9.30am Meet in cafe at car park. Discuss day plan.

9.45-10.30am Route planning and search techniques. (indoors)

10.30 – 12.30pm Equipment and how to use it (outside)

12.30-1.30pm Lunch

1.30-3.30pm Exercise in Avalanche site

3.30pm Summary of Day

The awareness day will cover tips on trip planning, the essentials regarding what to carry with you and how to use it in the event of an avalanche.

The course cost will be £45. Uplift ticket £TBC Ratio 1:10

-------------------------

Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders (2) - Will be a follow on course open to those that have attended Freerider course 1. This will focus on deciding where to go before an excursion, and then look at decision making in avalanche terrain, which will involve descending the mountain in appropriate terrain and identifying good practise and safe techniques.

Applicants must be strong skiers/boarders, able to ride on steep off-piste terrain in variable snow conditions in control.

The course cost will be £55. Uplift Ticket £TBC Ratio 1:6.

---------------------------------

The courses will be supported by Anatom, who will provide shovels, transceivers and probes and training help.

The awareness courses will be led by Mark Diggins who is the coordinator of the SAIS and has many years experience as a skier and International Mountain Guide. They will also be staffed by other IFMGA Mountain Guides engaged by the SAIS.

lynseyf, I don't know what shoogly had in mind for where to go but either Flotterstone Inn or Hillend ski centre are easy meeting places. It's probably worth a post at winterhighland to see if we can get a larger group as the extra confusion when someone accidentally leaves their beacon in transmit mode or inadvertently leads the group in the wrong direction is more 'challenging'. Sunday 20th would have to be from mid afternoon onwards for me but other than that day I can do mornings too.

shoogly, where are you !!

Dam posting on snowheads on my phone. I had posted a while ago but it's not appeared. Just need to check those dates and will let you know by Tuesday. Looking forward to it.

Will also be signing up to the cairngorm course as well so thanks for posting that.

Rightio! Sorry for slow response, had work stuff on my mind for the past week.

Saturday 19th is good for me.

Meeting place is the car park at Midlothian Ski Centre at Hillend. There's a good area just to the east of the ski slope with a good aspect with a few nooks and crannies for hiding transceivers/bodies etc.

Can we make it earlyish, say 9.30? Then we can just walk up the side of the ski slope from there.

How many folk are up for this? Having not done this before, I don't know how long we'll be on the hill for? If anyone can come who has experience of different situations we can get ourseves in that would be good.

Names here please so we know how many to expect.

Peter

shoogly, Damn! I quite fancied this but unforunately I will be away, what about some training during the season at one of our lovely Scottish resorts? Perhaps a day when the weather is really closed in just to make it more of a challenge? Although I realise those kind of days are rare in Scottish skiing wink

lynseyf, as it appears there's only the two of us up for this, I'm suggesting cancelling and maybe going with grahamsm1 idea. Not much point if there's only two of us as we'd only be able to try two different scenarios and wouldn't really learn a whole heap.

Think I'll just head over to Braehead for a ski instead.
